Ellen Johnson: Obama photo
November 12, 2008

To the editor:
I am asking you a simple question: Why was President-elect Obama’s picture placed on the last page of the newspaper the day after he was elected?
It reminded me of when our black brothers and sisters had to sit in the back of the bus so many years ago, because they were black.
It was a sad reality to see the paper after the joy of great unity the night before.
Obama is right in the eyes of God. There should be no black America or white America, or Asian America or Latino American, but only the United States of America.
Fear is an awful thing. As a people it makes us do awful things.
Ellen Johnson
Craig
Editor’s Note:The Craig Daily Press is a local, community newspaper. We chose to lead with a local photo over a national photo on the day after the election.

To me, 50 cal, this was an observation. I have to agree that the President-elect's photo should have been on the front page. After all, he is going to be the 44th President of the United States of America. That includes Craig, Moffat County, Colorado. By protocol his photo should have been on the front page. The Daily Press blew it.

Agreed, his picture should have been on the front page. Clearly unethical upon the paper's part. The definition of ethics applies here upon the decision made by whomever is responsible for his picture placed on the back page of the paper. Define ethical? >> “Being in accordance with the accepted principles of right and wrong” The action of the press blatently displays the opinion, expressions and lack of respect on their behalf.

They cut out alot of conservative writers also. The Editor, Jenny Grubbs is a liberal (her words not mine). Anyway, I am absolutely done with this guilt trip. Thanks to Martin, I nothing to feel guilty over. I'm under fourty and have never done anything to any black person. Go cry some where else about how the world is keeping the black man down. I don't see it!

Typical for Ellen: whining and crying! All you have to do is check the vote totals from last week. Over 70% for McCain and less than 30% for Obama. This would lead me to believe that the vast majority of people in Moffat County, which is served by the Daily Press, couldn't give a rip if they ever see a picture of B. Hussein Obama again. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with politics and philospies.

I don't give respect until its earned. I have heard enough about lets come together now that we have the 44th president. how many liberals said that about bush?

I am an American. It matters not who won the election, McCain or Obama. Whoever had won would have gained my respect, no matter which party affiliation. As it turned out, Obama won. Now it is time to be an American and show OUR president some respect. If you can't do that, go somewhere where it doesn't matter.

-hey silentman, why do you only refer to our president using his first initial and full middle name if you really aren't a bigot?
I left Moffat county and I'm glad; if that's the kind of respect a bright, honest, and visionary man who deserves better gets from the paper and the “community”. It's not like he's let us all down and lost our respect like our current President. At least I'll bet you gave him a chance, but then he has a nice “American” name and is comfortable to your narrow-minded world.
Thank God the rest of the country has vision and didn't buy into the McCain attacks and diversions that work on the far right who apparently like to live in a world of fear and loathing.

I guess we'll see what your “honest and visionary man” looks like down the road. Was he really truthful about taxes; William Ayers and Jerimiah Wright and his support for the 2nd Amendment? Was Obama truthful when he said he would set down, “with no preconditions” with the same people who have professed their hatred for this country? Respect has to be earned. John McCain earned my respect by serving this country honorably and with dignity. George Bush earned my respect by keeping this country, and each and every one of us, free from another terrorist attack. Barack Obama, (there, feel better now?) will get my respect if, and when, he EARNS it! By the way, please take historical note that John McCain went out of his way to be fair and honorable in the campaign. Even ordering his campaign and supporters to stop certain actions that he thought were wrong. Even through all of this you and I have found some common ground: I'm glad you left Moffat County too.

I am not supporting Obama in anything I don't want to. He has to prove himself to me.
Liberals, for the past eight years have been schooling the rest of America on hate for a President. You start early and never let up. No mater how good he does, he will be hated by the end of his term. Obama will never be above 50% unless he can pull off true miracles. And the road before him, the one he promised to fix, is all up hill. I wanted him to win. This is the perfict time to sort out the libral agenda. It will burn to ashes by the time this is over. So I'm with 50, he has to prove himself first. Heck, if he is a good president we'll give over, but untill then he'll only get what he has earned.
Hey 50, did you see the riots over gay marriage? I wonder what the riots over gun rights will look like. I bet those ones will be better.

sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!! yeah baby!! i'm not the one that started this one!!!
Openly…I hate Dufus Bush. I hate Dick Cheney far greater than Bush. Why? Because Bush is only a “Yes Man”…Cheney is the man in charge. That's the real truth. I will only say, that I didn't come to this point of hate for the GOP by inheritance or by reading MoveOn.org, etc. I hate these two criminals because of the B.S. that Bush and Cheney has pulled off. But this isn't about these two knuckle heads…it's about a picture not being on the front page…which it should have been. But who cares!! Rush Limbaugh can keel over with a coronary for all I care with his blabbering foaming rants….and of course I can only hope he does die soon…the bigoted bastard he is and a drug addict to boot!!! o.k….stay on track here.
Yes….proof will be seen. All of you have to admit that the Bush Presidency has been the worst…ever!!! He does have a documented I.Q. of 95……that's 95 people. Any of you can blame this idiot and the unilateral agenda spearheaded by the “Boys of the Project of the New American Century”…of which Cheney is part of. these guys destroyed this country people!!! With help from a Republican led Congress for the first six years of the Bush Era and blunders pulled off by Reagan and Nixon…Bush Sr. and blunders by Carter and Clinton as well. That damned Texan Lyndon Johnson!!
Obama's picture unfortunately wasn't placed on the front page of the Daily News. It's not gonna change the fact that Obama will be the next president. Stop the confrontations….this country is a wreck and I'm not convinced it can be turned around…ever!!! But…Obama is intelligent….nice change from the dummy sitting in the Oval Office now. We shall see…we shall see. You can blame the GOP political downfall on the GOP Old Guard and Bobble Head Palin. McCain was forced to accept this hand dealt to him. Blame him as well. But change must happen. No amount of racism or hate towards move ins to Craig will produce a viable direction for Craig. I hate Texans….Let me say this again…i hate texans!! Why? Arrogance. So don't get arrogant towards outsiders. They cause no one commenting here any harm. Most I meet aren't out to change the way Craig operates…….Except for them thar Texans!!
Well….I've said my fill….take a deep breath…we're all Americans….let's see what happens these next four years….Obama surely won't be any worse than Bush as been…and he can only do better. Smarts….you know…intelligence. I'm hoping!!

Of course I guess hes smart enough to fool half of America (government education thank you Ellen Johnson) into voting for him.
you know what CST Bush was a disaster. He tried so many times to out liberal the liberals. He spent way to much money, didn't have the balls to push forth a sound agenda, wanted to be a nice guy, and took away more freedoms from Americans than anyone since FDR. leave the conspiracies aside and focus on the facts about bush and I will agree with you.

i posted this on Karina Weiman: Shocked and amused, and i'm posting it here.
when a “conservative” president is elected, it's on the “liberal” papers…50cal
he was also born in Hawaii, his birth records were opened up…
i can't beleive you posted this editorial (Karina Weiman: Shocked and amused) your news paper is not fair and un-bias. i'm boycotting and all my friends are boycotting. i hope you all loose your jobs.
first off, barak doesn't want to get rid of your guns you ignorant, ignorant person;
he wants to ban assault riffles…as well as he should.
second, he's not going to mess with your coal job; he wants to make it hard to open a new power plant; and focus on making more effective, cleaner energy sources. take a look people, mccain was for the same issues. it is well documented…there's even VIDEO of him talking in front of the senate about it…
it WAS a racist thing for them to put it on the back page, it was a historical thing that happened!!!!
it was the biggest news in the country that day…is that NOT what NEWS papers are all about? the craig daily press is a news paper and yes, it is in moffat county, yes more people here voted for mccain, but our news is supposed to be fair and un-bias.
you saying that your not racist and that comments made about obama that you have said are not racist;
“In fact, I woke up wanting to empty my 401K, take the money to the store and buy all the canned and dry food, bottled water, guns and ammunition I possibly could, hole myself up in my home and wait for Obama’s relatives (aka al-Qaida) to come to America flying first class on Air Force One.”
that sounds a little racist to me…his relative “al-qaida”…his closest relatives are his grandma (rip) and his grandpa, who by the way are WHITE!!!! his grandpa fought for this great country of ours.
people don't even know what he stands for, or against. they say he's muslim (which he's not) they say he swore in on the koran (which he didn't, take a look yourself, it's clearly a bible…and btw, it's HIS very own bible) they say he's the anit-christ (take a closer look at the bible, he doesn't fit the mold; i also think this is the most ridiculous ignorant thing being said) and You/people say that he's related to al-quida…GROW UP!
YOU don't even know what he stood for (ie. coal, guns) you obviously just listened to what people had to say instead of researching it yourself.
this town is so one sided it makes me sick.
but i'm here for a COAL job, and it pays good, so i'll stay for a while, but just know…i'm not afraid of my income, it's going to still be here, i'm not stupid…
i DID vote for barak and can not wait until the day you all get over yourselves and realize he IS the man for the job.
ignorance, ma'am, is bliss…and you, sound very, very blissful.
thanks and have a good night.

The election has been over for a week and a half and I still don't know what to believe.
One thing that does confuse me is that people say he is against new power plants and will really hurt the coal industry. Why then did the IBEW and many other power realated unions back him??
I'm not going to say Ms Johnson is wrong in her letter to the editor nor are the rest of you wrong in your opinions. But you all make my head spin and I'm about to fall down, I'm so dizzy!!!

I have noticed that when anyone says anything against Obama, those that voted for him get very angry and upset and mean and hateful. Why? Hes been voted in so one would think they'd be so happy about it that nothing else mattered. Why get so defensive? So now Gem hopes that everyone at the DP lose their jobs? How mean is that? My Grandma always told me that you never wish bad luck on anyone because chances are great that it will happen to you instead. What are you going to do Gem if you lose your job in the coal industry? Will you sit back and reflect on your wishes against the DP staff? Its freedom of choice to boycott, but don't be nasty about it.

Lonely: Check the Illinois Senate record. EVERY chance he had to vote to restrict gun ownership, he voted to do so. EVERY time. He has said many times that, while he supports the 2nd Amendment, he FAVORS local control of guns. Nice way of saying we'll just let the local governments take guns away, no matter what the Constituion says. As a US Senator he has voted repeatedly to ban offshore drilling and to make it more difficult to explore for oil and gas in the lower 48 states. As Joe Friday would say: “Just the facts, maam”.

Isis, that's a great point. All the talk about Obama being a terrorist or marxist isn't that scary if one thing stays the same. My point is this, all this stuff about not drilling, taxing coal companies, raising taxes, and on and on doesn't matter much because we can always change back in 2-4 years. It only gets real scary when the government comes for guns. That means the only real check and balance left would be gone.
