Rodeo team gears up for state finals
May 29, 2008
Craig The Moffat County High School rodeo team is counting the days.
As the last high school sports team still in action, the pressure increases as state championships are around the corner.
The team brought five competitors to compete in Hugo last weekend - freshman Hanna Hegwer and juniors Troy Vernon, Taylor Vernon, Matt Bohrer and Eric Fleming.
Fleming - who normally enters in three or more events - competed in only bareback this weekend.
"He is having problems getting his rigging fit just right," coach Jill Hegwer said. "Unfortunately, he was bucked off both days."
Despite not placing or earning any cash or points, Fleming is sitting in fourth-place in state in the event.
Bohrer admitted to having a "rough weekend" in bull-riding.
"That rodeo hurt," he said.
Hegwer attended a goat-tying clinic two weeks ago during the team's off-week.
The freshman attempted some of the techniques she learned - which helped her take two seconds off her usual time - but still didn't finish in the money.
Hegwer missed both her breakaway calves.
Taylor took third in breakaway Saturday, catching her calf in 3.7 seconds, to take home a check for $96.90.
On Sunday, Taylor took second in barrels - after her rein flipped over her horse's head coming around the second barrel. She ran the pattern in 17.54 seconds and got a check for $160.65.
Taylor totaled $257.55 for her two days of work, as well as valuable state points.
Taylor is now 10th in the state for barrels.
Her brother, Troy, tied for first place in bull riding Saturday with a score of 77 points. Then, on Sunday, Troy took first place again with a score of 75. Troy's weekend payout for his effort was $194.25.
Troy is sitting in 5th place in the state for bulls.
Senior Stevie Brumback attended graduation, missing the rodeo.
The Bulldogs compete in Las Animas beginning Friday in the team's final rodeo before state finals.
