Craig briefs for May 21

Free CMS open house
Craig Craig Middle School will host an hourlong open house at 1 p.m. Saturday at the school, 915 Yampa Ave. Drawings of the new middle school will be on display and people can tour the existing school facilities. Demolition on the existing building is scheduled to start this summer.
Refreshments will be provided at the event, which is free and open to the public. For more information, call 824-3289.
Recycling collection temporarily shut down
Recycling services to Craig residents will not be available for the next two to three weeks as the Steamboat Springs Waste Management facility repairs a broken baler.
Waste Management uses the baler to compact recyclables and ship them away. Officials said the amount of materials put into the baler wore out the floor underneath it, and the baler pushed through the floor.
Officials said the soonest the floor could be repaired is May 30.
Craig's Road and Bridge Department uses Waste Management to provide free recycling services to Craig residents. The department's recycling center, 1775 N. Yampa Ave., will be closed until Waste Management resumes operations.
The recycling center won't be taking materials as drop-offs during that time.
CDOT to start Highway 13 project
The Colorado Department of Transportation expects to begin improvement projects today on Colorado Highway 13 north of Craig.
CDOT will widen and resurface Highway 13 from the Wyoming border south for five miles, from mile marker 128 to 123.
Crews also will install safety improvements on the highway for another 12 miles south from there, from mile marker 111 to 123. These include widening shoulders and installing new, taller guardrails.
