Fort Collins — Judging by his own standards, Cole Worsley has a lot left.

The Steamboat Springs junior said after the opening day at the boys Class 4A Swim and Dive Championships in Fort Collins, he wasn’t going as hard as he could.

While that was by design, it will all change today when Worsley will look to win state titles in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly finals.

Worsley — who swims for Moffat County High School — qualified first in the butterfly (55.09 seconds) and third in the freestyle (22.36) during Friday’s prelims.

“The goal for the morning was just to get into the finals,” Worsley said. Today, “I’m going to go for my fastest time. I wasn’t going 100 percent or wearing my fast suit. I want to get first in both.”

In the 50 free, Worsley will again look to catch up to Silver Creek’s Nick Koener. Last year, Worsley finished runner-up to Koener and the Silver Creek senior put up the fastest prelim time Friday.

“Everything will have to go right,” said Worsley, who plans to cut that last little bit of time off by shaving his legs and borrowing a state-of-the-art suit from his brother Blake, an All-American swimmer at Denver University. “I’ll have to hit every single thing perfectly.”

Worsley also will be part of the 200 freestyle relay team in today’s finals. On Friday, the team of Kyle Steitz, Cody Poirot, Tyler Kalsow and Worsley qualified sixth for today’s finals.

“I think that we’re all going to swim faster,” Poirot said. Friday “was about making it in the finals. (Today) is about getting the best time possible and beating as many people as possible.”

The 400 relay team of Steitz, Poirot, Worsley and Greg Ingalls made the consolation finals.

In the 200 medley relay, Moffat County was disqualified when Poirot left the blocks early. Still, the team of Poirot, Devyn Reece, Andrew Aultman and Ingalls each swam their best splits of the season.

“Everybody really swam well,” Moffat County coach Patti Worsley said. “We’re going to come back (today) and try to get some faster times. But they are pretty excited about their swims. Plus, I think they are ready to do really well.”

In other individual events, Kalsow’s finishes missed the finals in the 50 and 100 free.

“Out here, there are no more slow people anymore,” Kalsow said. “I got my personal best in the 100 free and all my other times were right around where they should be.”

The iron man award of the day went to Steitz. The senior swam the 500 free, 200 free relay, 100 backstroke and 400 free relay. He swam three events back-to-back — including finishing in the last heat of the 500 and then swimming in the first heat of the backstroke — and four out of five races in a row.

“It was tough,” Steitz said. “Especially the 500 and the backstroke. My legs were dead. It was hard but it was fun.”

Finals start at 3:30 p.m. today.
