The debate: Chewing gum in class
May 17, 2008
Editor's note: The following article was part of Boys & Girls Club after-school program, where students in the course learned the ins and outs of newspapers including reporting and writing an assignment.
Lately, students have been taking gum to school and chewing it in class.
They get into trouble and get detentions for it. They say that it's cool and fun to chew gum.
Javen Gumber, a fifth-grader at Craig Intermediate School, who has gotten detention for chewing gum, says that he loves to chew gum in class "because it tastes sooo : good and it annoys the teachers."
Some people think that chewing gum helps you concentrate.
Katelyn Peroulis, a fifth-grader at Craig Intermediate School, said that chewing gum should not be allowed in class.
She says "because the noise is annoying, and you could get tired if you chew it for too long. If you chew weird, it would be distracting."
She said if we could chew gum in class we should have it as a PAWS award, and the whole class gets to chew it.
Mr. Bolton, a band teacher at Craig Middle School and the Moffat County High School, says, "chewing gum would get in the carpet, under chairs and would cause instrumental decay. It would be irresponsible, rude and noisy."
If kids could chew gum in school, he would not let them chew it in his class.
Mrs. Grant, a fifth-grade Literacy teacher at CIS, says chewing gum in class would get in the carpet and under desks.
"It is unhealthy for other kids when there is chewed gum under their desks," she said. "When they talk, it might fall out, or you can't understand what they are saying."
If students were allowed to chew gum in school, she would make them spit it out before they would speak in class.
These people think students shouldn't chew gum in class, even if it helps you concentrate.
