The Moffat County High School swim team added another swimmer Saturday to its growing list of those headed to the state championships. Steamboat resident Kyle Steitz placed third in the 500-yard freestyle Saturday in the 4A state regional swimming finals in Glenwood Springs, becoming the 12th swimmer to qualify in the season-ending event beginning Friday in Fort Collins.

Steitz’s time of 5 minutes 30.19 seconds eclipsed the state qualifying time by more than two seconds.

“The entire team did really well,” MCHS coach Patti Worley said. “Everybody took off time. It was great to see with the quality of competition the boys saw out there.”

The team finished fourth overall with 198 points, but Worsley said the meet was a success individually.

“It was great to see everybody respond the way they did,” she said. “We just missed qualifying in the 100-free, too. It was really exciting to watch.”

Cody Poirot missed the 100-free qualifying time by 0.18 seconds.

The Steamboat resident finished fourth in a time of 53.68.

“He came in with a 55 (second time), and we weren’t anticipating him being so close,” Worsley said. “But after the preliminary round (53.74), he was really excited to go out and try again. He just missed it.”

The 200-medley relay team placed seventh in 2:11.93 but already had qualified for the state finals earlier in the year.

Cole Worsley won the 50-free in 21.96 and the 100-fly in 53.60.

He was pre-qualified in both events.

MCHS senior Tyler Kalsow placed third in both of his events although he pre-qualified earlier this year.

Kalsow swam the 50-free in 23.12 and the 100-free in 52.27.

The 200-yard free relay team placed second in 1:33.87 and the 400-free relay team captured third in 3:29.01.

Both teams had pre-qualified.

MCHS will be represented in 12 events in the state finals, the most during coach Worsley’s three-year tenure as coach.

“We have had a very successful season,” she said. “To have as many boys going to state as we do, it’s incredible. It just shows you the drive to succeed they all possess. I couldn’t be more proud.”
