*qualified for regional finals
Having pre-qualified for next week’s state championships in 11 events during the regular season, winning this weekend’s regional meet in Glenwood Springs wasn’t the top priority for the Moffat County High School swimming team.
“We are going to try to work on the little things,” coach Patti Worsley said Thursday about the regional meet. “We want to make sure everybody is ready for state.”
The top six finishers in each of Friday’s events advanced to today’s regional finals.
The Bulldogs swim team met the criteria in eight of 11 events.
Steamboat resident Cody Poirot placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing fifth with a time of 2 minutes, 5.95 seconds.
He also advanced in the 100-free, placing fourth in 53.74.
Kyle Steitz advanced to today’s final in the 200-IM, finishing fifth in 2:18.86, and the 500-free, finishing third in 5:37.76.
Andrew Aultman moves on in the 100-breast, placing in the sixth and final spot with a time of 1:13.17.
Cole Worsley entered regionals having pre-qualified for state in five events, and he had a strong showing Friday.
Cole won the 50-free in 21.94 and the 100-butterfly in 54.31.
The 400-freestyle relay team of Worsley, Steitz, Poirot and Tyler Kalsow finished first among all relay teams Friday.
The foursome clocked in at 3:29.67, nearly three seconds faster than second-place Grand Junction.
Kalsow finished third in the 50-free (23.04) and fifth in the 100-free (53.84).
