Craig briefs for May 6

May 6, 2008

A Moffat County School District bus carrying roughly 30 children collided with a dump truck early Monday morning while traveling north on Ranney Street.

At about 7:30 a.m., a commercial dump truck traveling west on First Street ran into the bus' side after failing to yield at a stop sign at the Ranney Street intersection, Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Brian Bagley said.

The collision was at fairly low speeds, Bagley added, and neither vehicle sustained much damage.

All children on the bus were taken to The Memorial Hospital by another school bus, which was called in after the accident.

A School District news release states the bus driver and emergency medical technicians reported no apparent injuries among the children.

However, Bagley said, the children were taken to the hospital because Colorado statutes do not allow a minor the right to waive medical care without a guardian's consent.

"It's a precaution for their sake," he said.

The news release also states the hospital released the children to either the School District or parents following medical examinations.
