Craig Police Chief Walt Vanatta has been selected to attend the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s Center for Police Leaders training on leadership in smaller police organizations in Duluth, Minn.
He is one of 19 chiefs from around the country chosen to participate in the course. Vanatta left Sunday for the training, which begins today.
“I am excited about this opportunity to attend such a prestigious IACP training,” Vanatta said in a news release. “What I learn at this intensive training will significantly improve my abilities, which will assist in my commitment to making Craig a safer, better place for all citizens. I am grateful to the sponsors of this training for providing the assistance that allows me to do so.”
The training program incorporates the “IACP’s comprehensive leadership development model,” according to the news release.
“The distinguishing feature of the training is to focus on the systematic development of leaders at all levels of an organization — the concept that every officer is a leader,” the news release states. “This trait is especially important for smaller police agencies, such as the Craig Police Department, where officers may frequently work alone.”
A travel award was provided by the IACP Smaller Police Department Technical Assistance Program, in conjunction with the IACP Foundation and the Target Corporation, to allow Vanatta to attend the training at “virtually no cost to the community,” according to the news release.
The travel award was offered by invitation only. Vanatta was one of 11 chiefs across the country to receive the award.
