MCHS golf team places fifth in Grand Junction

March 26, 2008

— After a one-week hiatus because of Spring break, Moffat County High School girls golf coach Anne Marie Roberts said she had expectations for her team.

The Bulldogs competed in their third tournament of the season Tuesday in Grand Junction, one day after returning from spring break.

Roberts said she had a goal each team member - Meghan Innes, Heather Nicholson and Callie Papoulas - should be able to reach on the links at Tiara Rado Golf Course.

She said she wanted Innes to be in the 80s, Nicholson to bust 100 and Papoulas to card a 110.

On Tuesday, they came awful close to meeting their coach's expectations.

The team placed fifth in the 10-team tournament - a combination of 4A and 5A schools - third, in 4A.

Innes carded an 89, Nicholson a 102 and Papoulas met the coach's mark dead-on, finishing with a 110.

"I wasn't too far off was I?" Roberts said. "Our putting was a little atrocious, but they all hit the ball fairly well."

Roberts said the greens at Tiara Rado were "like rocks," but off the greens is where the girls made up strokes.

"Their long game for all of them was good," she said. "It was just a lot of putting. I mean a lot of putting."

Roberts said Innes could have shot a 73 if she cut her putts in half, Nicholson would have been in the 90s if not for a few penalty strokes and Papoulas had putter issues, as well.

"Even Callie's grandmother told her that if she'd putted better, she could have busted 100, too," Roberts said.

Innes said she was happy with her round, considering she spent a week away from the links.

"I haven't picked up a club in a week," she said. "I just couldn't get my putter going. It was horrible. The greens and my putting, both."

Nicholson was pleased with her new driver - she added a new Callaway to her bag during the break - but more so on the range than on the course.

"I hit it good on the range, but when I got on the course my swing was all messed up," she said. "I have to be more consistent. One shot I hit into the water, and I had to drop. My next shot was on the green. I have to work on that."

For Papoulas, it was all about trying to have fun on a course she was playing for the first time.

"My drives were a lot better than the last time I played," the freshman said, "and it was fun. It would have been more fun, though, if I made more putts."

Next up for the Bulldogs golf team is a trip to Delta April 3, when MCHS competes at Devils Thumb Golf Course.

"It's coming along," Innes said.
