With spring break over, the task for Moffat County High School coaches is to turn the attention back to sports.

For the MCHS girls golf team, coach Anne Marie Roberts said coming back from the one-week hiatus is like "starting over".

"They were all gone," Roberts said of her three-member team. "It's pretty much like starting all over again," she said. "It's just like brand new now."

The team of senior Megan Innes, sophomore Heather Nicholson and freshman Callie Papoulas will attempt to start over today in Grand Junction, where the Bulldogs tee-off at Tiara Rado Golf Course.

Innes and Nicholson have played Tiara Rado before, and Roberts said she thinks those two golfers should do well, despite the layoff.

And, although Papoulas has played in only two competitive rounds this season - encompassing her high school career thus far - Roberts said the freshman also should do well.

"Callie isn't as nervous anymore," she said. "She's been through a couple of rounds now, and I think she's gotten rid of the nerves she had in the beginning."

Roberts said she expects lower numbers from her team today, although practices so far this year have been limited because of the weather.

"I expect all three of them to have lower scores. If not, I'm going to leave them there," she said jokingly. "We are going to hit range balls at night and again in the morning, so that should help."

Nicholson added a new driver to her bag during the break, discarding her old King Cobra and adding a Callaway Big Bertha.

The change, Roberts said, should bode well for MCHS' longest hitter off the tee.

"She's hitting the ball 20 yards further now," Roberts said. "She tried the new Cobra and the Callaway was 10 yards farther. She should be even better off the tee now, just from that change."

Roberts isolated the areas she would like to see each golfer improve on in the upcoming weeks, beginning today.

"I would like to see her (Nicholson) have more confidence. She can do it. She can bust 100 every time," Roberts said. "I just want to see more confidence out of her."

As for Papoulas:

"She's gotten over the nerve thing, so I'm going to play her against better competition," Roberts said. "The first two times out I was looking for her to get some experience. Now she's ready to move up."

And for Innes:

"Megan and I had a little chat about her aggressiveness, about just going out and getting after it," Roberts said. "Instead of being reserved, she needs to go out and play that way. She can shoot 75, she needs to not be reserved."

So, now that the plan of action is in place for the Bulldogs, all that is left is execution.

"I really believe we will shoot lower scores this time around," Roberts said. "Actually, I expect lower scores this time around."
