The Eagle's Wings Christian School Board of Directors meets at 5:30 p.m. on the second Monday of every month at the Craig Fire Station. For more information, call 824-4268.
Carol Whitehead, a Craig resident, saw her two children pass through a Christian school in Arvada.
The institution left an impression.
"The education was spectacular," she said.
Now that Whitehead's two children are grown, she wants to help provide Christian-based education to local children.
Enter Eagle's Wings Christian School, a nonprofit private institution planned to start classes this fall.
Whitehead serves on the school's board of directors, which formed at the end of last year.
The school's purpose is "to provide its students with a college preparatory education set in the framework of Christian instruction and example, thereby putting God back in the school as intended by the founding fathers of our country," according to its mission statement.
The private school is non-denomination and isn't associated with a church. It is slated to contain kindergarten through 12th grades.
Because its curriculum is primarily faith-based, the school isn't eligible to receive state or federal funding.
The institution will rely solely on student tuition and community donations for its funding, Board President Betty Ann Duzik said.
Duzik thinks there's enough community support for the school to make it successful.
In November, the board sent out a survey to Craig and Hayden churches, asking congregants if they would support a private Christian school in Craig.
Although the group didn't tally the responses, Board Vice President Patrick Duzik said about 95 percent of the responses were in favor of starting a Christian school in Craig.
The school has some details to iron out before it opens its doors.
Although the school has a school building, it needs a five-acre plot to place it on.
The board will consider renting a building if it doesn't secure the land by fall, Betty Ann Duzik said.
Tuition and an enrollment date haven't been set yet, she said, adding that she couldn't estimate cost of starting the school until she knew how many students would enroll for next year.
To date, no students have enrolled in the class.
A timeline for receiving accreditation from the Association of Christian Schools International also depends on how many students, and the subsequent number of teachers, the school would house, she said.
The board hosted a question-and-answer session Monday night to get an idea of how many parents were interested in enrolling their children next fall.
More than 15 residents - some holding infants or leading toddlers in tow - attended the 5:30 p.m. gathering at the Craig Fire Station. About five of them expressed interest in putting their children in the school.
Others who attended, like Greg Rhyne, said his two children were too young to attend school.
Still, Rhyne said his children's attendance at Eagle's Wings Christian School could be "a possibility" in the future.
"It would be a good education for them," he said.
Rhyne said he believed the school's success depends on whether Craig residents support it.
Ultimately, though, he believes the school's future relies on a higher power.
"It's all up to God," Rhyne said.
