Steamboat Springs — A 19-year-old bicyclist who ran a red light and was struck by a truck was treated at the emergency room and released Monday.

Matthew Tello was traveling north on 13th Street just before 4 p.m. Monday, when he rode his bicycle through the red light and was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet pickup heading westbound on Lincoln Avenue, according to Steamboat Springs police.

Tello, who was not wearing a helmet, landed 23 feet from the point of impact, Sgt. Gerard Geis said at the scene Monday.

Tello, who was conscious and breathing at the scene, was transported to Yampa Valley Medical Center via ambulance by Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue. He was treated for undisclosed injuries and released from the emergency room later that night, hospital spokeswoman Christine McKelvie said.

Police did not cite anyone in the crash, Capt. Joel Rae said.

No injuries in moose crash

An elderly man escaped injury when he struck a bull moose on Rabbit Ears Pass on Tuesday morning.

The man, who was headed east on U.S. Highway 40 in a rented Dodge minivan, hit the animal near mile marker 147.5, just past the brake check area near the west summit, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Brett Hilling said. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The minivan was seriously damaged and although the driver escaped unharmed, the moose was killed, Hilling said.
