Bill Harding: Huck Finn Day a success, vet transport increasing

Huck Finn Day

The 2008 Huck Finn Fun Day was a great success.

The weather wasn’t the best — it was cold and windy, therefore young bare chested Huck Finns were bright blue and shaking. Coffee was the preferred drink and the hot dogs and hamburgers were really cool. Plus, the chips and napkins wouldn’t stay on the plates.

I want to thank everyone who helped to make it a success, especially the Colorado Division of Wildlife, the Craig Lions Club for use of its trailer, the Garcia boys who organized the event and solicited donations and all those corporate and individual sponsors that helped financially.

VAMC Transports for 2008

For 2008, the Moffat County/Veterans of Foreign Wars veteran van — sponsored by funding from the county and the Colorado Division of Military & Veteran Affairs grant monies — has been very active.

So far, we have made 44 trips with 81 riders. This month, we have nine trips scheduled. We have started July planning with two requests.

Our regular driver, Dick Maxson, still is out of service but is recovering from his medical issues steadily. It will still be some time until we know if he will be able to drive again. The van service will continue but is being covered by volunteers only.

Occasionally, I will be out of the office to ensure that the travel to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Junction is covered. Historically, transportation supplied by this office averaged 5.5 trips to Grand Junction a month. Since the van arrived, the demand has risen steadily and, with rising fuel costs, we may see more elderly vet riders who can no longer afford to get to Grand Junction on their own.

Office closed

The Moffat County Veterans Service Office will be closed Friday, June 20, through Thursday, June 26, while I am attending my ship reunion out of state.

The availability for rides to VAMC in Grand Junction will be very limited and will need to be arranged before I leave the office Thursday, June 19.

There still is no regular driver, and I have limited volunteer drivers to pull from.

Lost camera

It was found, thanks for all the assistance.
