Hunting season housing needed
Craig The Craig Chamber of Commerce is creating an inventory of apartments, cabins, rooms and places to park campers and RVs (with or without hook-ups) for the upcoming big game hunting seasons, the organization reported in a news release Monday.
"We anticipate that the demand for temporary housing will outstrip the capacity of local commercial housing providers," the Chamber said in the release. "Several residents rent spare bedrooms, guest homes and cabins for extra income during hunting season. No amenities are needed. Most visitors are looking only for a place to sleep."
Those who are interested in assisting should contact the Chamber at 824-5689, (800) 864-4405 or e-mail info@craig-chamber.com. Anyone interested may also contact Sportsman Information Officer Terry Carwile at 824-3046 or e-mail sportsman-info@craig-chamber.com.
Chief Fire containment anticipated by today
The Chief Fire, about 15 miles southwest of Craig, kicked up Tuesday afternoon as a holdover from previous thunderstorms. Smoke was visible to surrounding areas from the 358-acre fire in the Duffy Mountain area on Bureau of Land Management public land.
Responding resources were two BLM engines, one Moffat County Sheriff's Department engine, Craig Hot Shots, one single-engine air tanker and one helicopter out of Rifle.
Pushed by light winds, the fire spread quickly through the grass and sagebrush. Full containment was expected by Wednesday night, the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit reported in a news release.
There were also three fires Tuesday west of Maybell in Browns Park and near Dinosaur National Monument.
The Hughes Fire, on BLM public land, was four acres located just south of Highway 318 in Douglas Draw burning pinion and juniper trees. The two other incidents were less than one-tenth of an acre and are contained. BLM, Dinosaur National Monument and Browns Park Refuge fire personnel worked those fires.
No structures or improvements are threatened by any of the fires.
Anticipated weather for the rest of this week is a return to warm and dry conditions. Temperatures in the upper 80s to mid 90s are expected. Effects from recent moisture will dissipate quickly with fuels being readily receptive to fire ignition. People are asked to be cautious when using fire outdoors.
Dial 911 to report a fire.
Include your location and contact information, location of fire, approximate size, type of smoke (black, white, etc.), what is burning and closest landmark or road.
