C.R. 37 extension nearly complete
July 31, 2008
Routt County Road 37 is almost, but not quite, linked up to U.S. Highway 40 east of Hayden.
The road has been extended northward near Hayden Cemetery, east of the new community center at the Haven Assisted Living Facility. The realigned section runs parallel to Shelton Lane.
The asphalt has been laid on town right-of-way, and the crew cannot build the intersection at U.S. 40 until the town receives final permits from the Colorado Department of Transportation, Town Manager Russ Martin said.
Town officials are sending more information that CDOT requested this week.
"Hopefully, they'll be able to turn that around in the next few weeks, and we'll have an access permit," Martin said. He said the town hopes to open the road by the end of August.
He said the contractor, Precision Excavating, opted to go ahead with the construction because of scheduling, even though the town was awaiting permits.
The town is asking to lower the speed limits 10 mph on U.S. 40 around the new road, Martin said.
"It basically becomes the edge of town," he said of the incoming intersection. The town also will consider renaming the road at its Town Board meeting next week, Martin said.
The new police station will sit along the realigned C.R. 37, on the eastern side of the road near the Haven.
No traffic light is planned for the U.S. 40 intersection now, Martin said. There will be a stop sign, a right-turn lane and a left-turn lane from C.R. 37 onto U.S. 40, he said.
Although construction sometimes slowed traffic near the cemetery, the project hasn't caused major snarls, he said.
"They blocked off the incomplete road," Martin said. "Everything else, during construction there were times when they had to work for periods of time and they moved traffic."
He said the town was a couple of weeks away from moving dirt for the new police station.
"We've pretty much gotten to a point where we've got all the site prep work," Martin said. "All the design is done."
The actual building will probably be under construction starting in September, he said.
