100 percent Bulldog
Football players to hit Bulldog Proving Grounds starting today
July 28, 2008
The back of the press box overlooking the Moffat County High School football field reads "Bulldog Proving Grounds."
Beginning today, football players from grades seven through 12 will get their chance to do just that.
MCHS' football coaches aren't making it any easier, either.
The inaugural FASDOGS speed camp, designed to work on fundamentals, agility and speed, is scheduled for two, four-day sessions.
The first session begins today, and head coach Kip Hafey said the tasks that will be laid out in front of perspective members of the gridiron better take notice.
"It's going to be hard work," Hafey said. "It's going to be conditioning. We are calling it FASDOGS for a reason. It's going to be really cool, but it's going to be really tough. It's going to be 45 minutes to an hour, eight days, but if they make it to every one of the sessions, it will pay off."
Hafey said he and his staff are molding the camp around similar camps run throughout the NFL.
"The stuff that we've gotten is some of the top athlete stuff from the personal trainers in the NFL," he said. "We're taking that and toning it down to where it fits high school. This is the stuff that NFL players are using to gain speed."
Working fundamentals is important, Hafey said, but having the opportunity to work players out by position is what makes this camp different.
"You want position specific speed, and that's what we want to work on," he said. "It's about getting them prepped and faster."
Players who complete each of the eight sessions will be awarded a shirt that says "100% Bulldog" signaling the sacrifice each player has made to the team and the commitment to the season that lies ahead.
"I'm going to be honest about it," Hafey said. "It's not going to be easy. It's going to be tough. They're going to come out, and we're going to work their butts off. But I can guarantee them this: they will be faster when they leave; they're going to be in better shape when they leave; and they will be more of a team when they leave."
Since the camp is a first for the prospective players as well as the coaching staff, Hafey only could guess how many will attend.
"I hope every kid that's interested in playing football in the seventh and eighth grade shows up," Hafey said, "and I hope every high-schooler shows up.
"If we have 100 kids that show up, it would be awesome."
