Sally Smith: Clarifying Pine Ridge residents’ opinion

Craig To the Editor:
In regard to Wednesday's article, "Annexation Approved," I would like to clarify the position of the Pine Ridge residents regarding duplexes and apartments. At the Planning Commission Public Hearing on June 16, the first opportunity we had to voice our concerns, three suggestions were presented to the commission:
First, according to Policy 56 of the Craig Master Plan, adopted in 2003, "The City of Craig shall promote the development of existing vacant land zoned residential, commercial, and industrial use within its incorporated limits before pursuing the annexation of unincorporated vacant land, to the degree practical."
There are, within the city limits, three large RHD (residential high-density) zoned parcels and two large residential medium density zoned parcels, which are undeveloped, along with numerous parcels on undeveloped commercial property. We suggested the city should follow their own policy and develop the parcels within the city limits before annexing outlying agricultural property.
Second, the 60 acres in question is bordered all along the west side and most of the north side by residential low-density zoning. A small portion of the north border is zoned commercial; the remaining borders are agricultural. We suggested that if this property had to be annexed it would make sense to zone it RLD, as well.
Third, Ron Schnackenberg presented a plan to the planning and zoning commission which would have placed the six large apartment buildings further south and off the top of the hill, increased the RLD zone for single-family homes to incorporate the top of the hill, and left the RMD zone for duplexes as in the developers' plan.
When Mr. Schnackenberg said at the meeting Tuesday, "I just think it is in the wrong spot," he was referring to the placement of the apartment buildings on the top of the hill.
The statement in the article that "Pine Ridge residents still opposed the plan's inclusion of duplexes and apartment buildings" is incorrect.
Although we opposed annexation in the first place (based on the reasons set forth above), to the extent the City annexed the property and zoned it residential high-density, our opposition, at that point, was and is to the placement of the apartment buildings on top of the hill.

Question of the week
Should the Craig Chamber of Commerce revise its State of the County attendance policy to allow people to hear speakers without paying for a ticket?

oh B.S. its not your property you don't have the right to tell people what to do with it if you wanted it to remain the way it was you should have bought it. you just thought that you had another legal hold on someone.

Sally—You just keep on keepin on. I've found in this community that people will just leave you alone if you keep your nose out of their business. As high in the air as you seem to have your nose pointed, I don't think you will have to worry about the lower masses.

Personally, I can't blame the residents of Pine Ridge. They have a nice subdivision with good home values. If the city puts a bunch of duplexes, apartments, or other low-income housing there, the home values will drop significantly. My guess is that if you lived up there, you would feel the same way that they do. ,

city isn't putting anything up there. a private developer bought the land and is developing it the way they want to.

A well maintained subdivision can complement Pine Ridge. It doesn't mean home values will go down. Just because some people don't have six figure incomes doesn't mean they are pigs. The arrogance of those in Pine Ridge astound me. Pride in home ownership brings out the best in people. Snobs are snobs. They can look down on us common people all they want, but we all put our pants on one leg at a time. Just cause they have more money, doesn't make them better people. I think this just shows how small minded some can be.

Granny, I would agree with you on some residents….but not others. I know several residents up there that are not snobby and are good people who were able to buy up there before the prices went crazy. I also agree with you that people who don't make six figure incomes are not pigs. I don't make close to that much money. All I am saying is that I can understand why they may fight some of the development that is going on.
