— With "the toughest stretch of training" almost behind her team, Moffat County girls swimming coach Marin Campbell said the team is tired.

"Every one of the girls swam pretty tired," Campbell said. "We've been working hard on our legs this past week. When your legs are fatigued, it's pretty much impossible to swim at your highest level. Kicking is a huge part of speed and power."

Despite the soreness, Moffat County still mustered enough will to beat host Grand Junction and Palisade/Central on Saturday.

Kelsey Conci won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle.

Her twin sister, Caitlin, won the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly.

And, the Moffat relay team captured first in two of three relay races, to help vault the Bulldog swimmers to a meet-winning 101 points.

Grand Junction finished second, tallying 92 points, and Palisade/Central placed third with 61.

The Bulldogs responded well to intense practices the past month, and Campbell said the results carried into the pool.

"The girls did really well even though we're focusing on the next two weeks," she said. "We only have three tough practices left until we start to taper."

Tapering, Campbell said, is when the girls begin to gradually work less on strength and the emphasis is geared more on speed.

Regionals begin Feb. 8 in Montrose, but before then, Moffat hosts its last meet of the season Saturday.

Campbell said the girls are eager for the meet's arrival.

"The girls are starting to get stir crazy," Campbell said. "We are looking forward to our last home meet. It is the last weekend before regionals."

The Conci sisters already have qualified for the state finals, as has sophomore diver Genna Bradley.

Moffat visits Delta on Friday, leaving three meets (including regionals) left for the rest of the team to qualify.

"I wish I could say we would have more girls qualify," Campbell said. "But, it's just probably not going to happen."

Notes:

The 200-yard medley relay team anchored by the Conci twins has yet to qualify for state, needing to shave off less than a second to meet the required time. : Bradley didn't compete in Grand Junction because of the lack of a regulation diving board. ... Kellie Looper swam a career best in the 50-yard freestyle.
