— The MCHS boys and girls freshman basketball teams captured first-place Saturday in Eagle Valley, while competing in four-team tournaments.

Girls

The freshman girls basketball team defeated Basalt, 42-13, behind 13 points scored by Lauren Roberts. Nike Cleverly added 10, while Callie Papoulas and Brittney Ivers pitched in with six apiece.

Moffat County then dispatched Eagle Valley, 42-23, in the second round, with Roberts scoring 16 points to lead the way. Papoulas dropped in nine, and Maddy Jourgensen added six.

The Bulldogs (14-2 overall) stormed by Roaring Fork in the title game, 55-6, to finish 3-0 and clinch the championship.

Roberts led the Moffat attack once again, tallying 16 points in the finale. Ivers and Jourgensen added 10 points each.

“We were hoping for better competition,” Bulldog coach Norm Yoast said. “But, overall we got a chance to work on some things. It was nice to see some different teams. We had a good trip.”

Boys

The Moffat County freshman boys basketball team duplicated the girls Saturday at Eagle Valley.

The Bulldogs (11-2 overall) beat host Eagle Valley, 32-28, in the opening round, behind 13 points scored by Dustin Carlson. Angelo Raftopoulos pitched in with nine, and Mark Dockstader added seven.

Moffat County edged Basalt, 32-28 in the second game using a balanced offensive attack. Raftopoulos and Dockstader scored seven points apiece.

In the championship game, Raftopoulos dropped 12 points on Battle Mountain, to help lead the Bulldogs to a 54-29 victory.

Carlson added 10, and Dockstader tallied nine.

“We had a really good weekend,” Moffat coach Joe Padon said. “The intensity wasn’t always there, but a win is a win. I’ll take it.”
