Craig Moffat County boys basketball coach Steve Maneotis’ voice is enthusiastic as he talks about this weekend’s matchup with visiting Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley.
The Bulldogs picked up their first league win of the season Saturday, and Maneotis said he believes Moffat County has the opportunity to pick up a few more at the hands of the visitors, if the team plays well this weekend.
“Athletically, we are better on paper than the teams we will face this weekend,” he said. “If we take care of business and play our game, I think we can win more.”
Battle Mountain (1-4 Western Slope League) visits today, followed Saturday by a home contest against Eagle Valley (2-3 WSL).
Should the Bulldogs win both games, they will leapfrog both teams into fifth in the league.
“We are not worried about those other teams,” Maneotis said. “We are focused on how to get better against all teams. Sometimes, you just need to go out and play hard, regardless of the competition.”
Maneotis said the team has been working hard this week in practice.
He has split the team up, with his assistant coaches working with the guards and Maneotis working with the post players.
Down low is where Maneotis has said his team’s strength lies, and he intends to utilize that strength to the fullest.
“The post players have been playing much better,” he said. “I’ve taken them on as a personal project. They are getting to the iron and finishing well.”
Maneotis said he’s been stressing defense this week, as well. The Bulldogs are allowing more than 67 points per game, while the offense is averaging about 54 points per game.
