— Debbie Tomlin, 44, and Roxanne Nelson, 36, recognized a business opportunity.

The two are managing partners of Nakita Mountain Spa, Craig’s fist full-service shop for beauty and pampering, at 25 W. Victory Way, half a block west of Yampa Avenue.

“We’re women, and it’s what we want,” Tomlin said.

Since Nakita Spa opened Jan. 1, the operation expanded from one nail technician to include three masseuses, a tanning parlor and an esthetician who does facials and makeup.

“I don’t think Craig has ever had so much under one roof,” Nelson said. “We’re aiming to try and make it a one-stop shop.”

As soon as roof repairs are completed on the back of the building — scheduled for Feb. 1 — the spa will round out with hair stylists and a full line of products, Tomlin added.

The spa grew out of Nakita Nails, once located in the Country Mall before a recent fire destroyed the building.

Opening the new store has been a blessing despite the stress, Nelson said.

“It’s overwhelming, but I’m excited,” she said. “I’ve never put this much into something before, besides my house.”

Picking up after the loss at the Country Mall was difficult, but fortune seems to have smiled, Nelson said.

She started as Nakita Spa’s lone nail technician. Now she is looking forward to opening the hair salon and really settling in.

“I was underinsured a little bit” for the fire, she said. “When we first opened (in the new location), it was just a little empty shop, just two chairs and a table and me. But I didn’t lose a single client. As a matter of fact, I gained four new clients in just the last couple weeks.”

The two were originally going to open a family-style restaurant, Tomlin said, since Nelson also once worked as a part-time waitress.

“But, she decided she liked doing nails better, and here we are,” Tomlin said.

Among Nakita Spa’s services are five kinds of massage: Swedish, deep tissue, heated stones, pre-natal and reflexology, a technique based on using pressure points to relax the body.

Massages are offered at $35 for a half hour up to $100 for an hour and a half. There is a February special at $45 for an hour as long as the appointment is scheduled in February.

Tanning comes in at $30 for a one-month, unlimited package.

“Tanning is year-round,” Nelson said.

Clients can buy individual tanning sessions, as well.

Nails are $35 to $45 for a full set.

Gift certificates are available, and the pair is working on developing combination package prices for clients who want two or more services.
