Craig Two words came out almost immediately when coach Marin Campbell described the Moffat County High School girls swim team's performance at the Jeffco Invite on Friday and Saturday: great and excited.
"Everyone had their best times," she said. "To me, that is the most exciting thing. I mean, yeah, it's cool to place well, but as far as a team, I think the most important thing is that we are consistently going out there and performing our best."
Seventeen teams competed at the two-day meet. Final results were not available, and times listed are unofficial.
"It's a big meet," the 3A coach said. "It's a Front Range meet, so there are 4A and 5A schools there. It's very competitive. : It's definitely on par with a state-caliber meet, more than the Western Slope meets."
Facing tough competition, senior Kelsey Conci placed first in two events, swimming the 50-yard freestyle in 24.84 seconds, and the 100 backstroke in 59.87.
Senior Caitlin Conci came in third in the 100 butterfly, swimming a 1:03.7.
Cameo Wilson made it to finals in the junior varsity's 100-freestyle event, placing fourth.
Clare Sorrentino also made the finals in the junior varsity meet, placing third in the 100 breaststroke.
"I was definitely pleased," the coach said, "especially with Cameo and Clare making it back to the finals and placing. : Cameo is just having an awesome year, and Katherine Dodd (who was on the a varsity relay that made it to finals) is having an awesome year."
Next up, the girls visit Glenwood for a quad meet Saturday. The time is to be announced.
Campbell said the team is progressing toward the regional meet, but made it clear the path to get there is different.
"It's a different team than last year," she said. "There are more inexperienced swimmers and less swimmers overall, so regionals will be a different meet than last year was for us.
"However, I'm very excited about how the girls are progressing this year, the new girls and the girls with experience."

Question of the week
Should the Craig Chamber of Commerce revise its State of the County attendance policy to allow people to hear speakers without paying for a ticket?
