Bulldogs boys fall, 75-46, to Demons

January 12, 2008

— After outscoring Moffat County, 23-9, in the third quarter and taking a 54-37 lead, the Demons put on a show for the crowd at Glenwood Springs High School.

A dunk, a spin-move layup and back-to-back 3-pointers highlighted the final frame for the Glenwood Springs boys basketball team as they rolled past the Bulldogs, 75-46, on Friday night.

First, the Demons 6-foot-8 Donnie Jennert picked off a pass at half court, then dribbled down and slammed the ball in the hole.

Demon point guard Kevin Screen picked off a pass a few minutes later, speeding down the court and flashing a spin move before banking an easy layup off the glass. As if that wasn't enough to get the crowd going, Jordan Ciani and Adam Hawkins sunk back-to-back 3s to seal the victory.

In the final minute, Jennert put the icing on Glenwood's cake by knocking down a 3.

After a back-and-forth first half, which included a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from guard Dakota Stonehouse to put the Demons up 20-17 at the end of the first quarter, Glenwood came out on a tear in the second frame.

Stonehouse got it started with a 3, then stole a pass and found Screen for a layup a few seconds later as Glenwood went up 34-28.

The Demons kept on stealing and converting to take a 54-37 lead into the final eight minutes. Glenwood finished the game with 13 steals as a team, four of which belonged to Ciani.

Stonehouse finished the game with 18 points, including three 3s and five assists, while Screen and Connor Riley totaled 12 and 10 respectively.

Bulldog coach Steve Maneotis, however, pointed to a key loss in the first half when point guard Mike Peters was injured in a knee-to-knee collision in the first quarter. Peters played through the pain in the first half before being sidelined.

"Highly upset," were the first words out of the coach's mouth. "Frustrated we lost Mike Peters."

He pointed out that the game was close within one point, but that "We didn't have a point guard to handle Glenwood's pressure."

He added, "My hat's off to Glenwood. They played two solid halves, and we didn't."

Moffat had a strong effort inside the paint, with forward Colton Conrad scoring 19 points and post Chayton Owens ending with 12. The Bulldogs also had a good night from the free-throw line, hitting nine of 11 attempts.

"We have a lot of work to do," Maneotis said. "It seems like everytime we start to get close to a win, we kind of get blind sided. The kids were playing well, and then Mike gets hurt, and everything falls apart."

Glenwood, 6-2 overall, 1-0 in WSL, will now hit the road to play Steamboat Springs in a league contest at 5:30 p.m. today. Moffat, 1-8 overall, 0-2 WSL, will be at home, hosting Rifle at 7:30 p.m. today.

"My mind set (facing Rifle) is we have to redesign the whole offense to figure out how we're going to handle Rifle's pressure," the Bulldog coach said. "We're going to roll up our sleeves, and we're going to get to work."
