Our view: Making a winter wonderland

— Last Saturday’s editorials encouraged community members to move beyond merely pointing out problems and look for solutions.

Then on Saturday and Sunday of last week, there was a perfect example of that being done.

We could not continue in good conscience without recognizing the people who put on the Winter Festival at the Wyman Museum. A festival that filled a space in Moffat County’s calendar long given up to emptiness.

The people of the Wyman Museum, the people of X-treme Mountain Racing, the people of the Western Ride-in, we would name you but there are too many and to leave any out would cheapen our sentiment.

You know who you are, and you know you didn’t do this for a silly commendation from a silly editorial board.

For as long as many can remember, Moffat County has felt the lonely chill of winter while looking up-valley at the warm sights of many a tourist family buying meals and package deals.

Well, the Winter Festival brought more than 1,000 people during the weekend to our little abode. If we want to be the world capital of anything not in the fall, Moffat County will need more enterprising residents such as these.

What’s amazing is how much there was to do. From last year to this one, there were races this county had never seen before, there were children’s activities, there were cook-offs, trophies and prizes.

Possibly even a new Moffat County tradition started by awarding the best camp cook with a rotating trophy.

We’re sure it would have been nice to be a tasting judge.

This is a prime example of people who didn’t endlessly bemoan the fact there is little to do in Moffat County between December and June.

In the clearest terms, the people of the Wyman Museum and their partners on this event are assets to the community.

As are all the organizers for every event we see throughout the year, such as Whittle the Wood, Grand Ole West Days, Sheep Wagon Days, Triple Crown and the Puck Ewes Mardi Gras Tournament, just to name a few.

We want to see more outside-of-the-box thinkers.

There are organizations that can help. The Moffat County Tourism Association provides financing for advertising, as one example.

The people sitting at home watching Denver-area commercials about upcoming Red Rocks concerts want to see some of you, too.

We all can make this community what we want — with concerts and festivals and whatever — we just need to act.

The organizers for the Winter Festival did, and we applaud them for that.
