— The Moffat County Bulldog hockey club advanced to the second round of the Rocky Mountain Youth Hockey League playoffs this weekend, sweeping past visiting Oak Creek to advance to the semi-final round of the league playoffs.

Throughout the past week, Moffat County’s opposition had been undecided.

Kremmling and Oak Creek were tied at the end of the regular season, so Moffat County’s opposition wasn’t clear. Not until the day before the game did the Bulldogs find out who they were playing, and when.

Apparently, it didn’t matter.

Moffat County — the third seed — shut out sixth seeded Oak Creek on Friday, 2-0, behind the stellar net play of sophomore goalie Spencer Wayman.

Wayman stopped 20 shots, earning his third shutout of the season.

Joel Pomeroy scored in the first period, enabling the Bulldogs to jump out to an early lead. Mike Lefler lit the blue light behind the visitors net in the third period, providing the final margin of victory.

On Sunday morning, Moffat County closed out the best-of-three series, winning 3-1, to advance to the second round.

Jarrod Stillion put the Bulldogs on the board first, followed by a Cole DuBois goal and Lefler’s second tally of the series.

Senior Bryce Ponikvar picked up his seventh win of the season in the Bulldog series victory

With the first-round sweep, Moffat County moves on to the league’s Frozen Four beginning Saturday in Grand Junction.

The Bulldogs, (12-3-1 RMYHL) face off against second-ranked Crested Butte (14-2).
