I have lived in this area my entire life, and the deer and elk have always gone in cycles. Ranchers who keep saying they want something done about the elk eating their hay should think about letting people in to hunt without charging so much. That would help with the so-called problem before it starts. I don’t feel sorry for these people. They want the elk at hunting season, but not now. That’s because they are not making money. When they have to spend some to help the herds, they don’t want to. Some things are wrong with this idea. The elk can help the ranchers, but they can’t help them.

Feb. 17 to 23 is “Through With Chew Week,” a campaign to decrease spit tobacco and increase awareness of the negative health effects of using this product. In addition, the “Great American Spitout” is Feb. 21. Tobacco-free quit kits for chewers are available at the VNA offices in Steamboat at 940 Central Park Drive, Suite 101 and in Craig at 745 Russell St. The kits promote the Colorado QuitLine and free support from a trained coach who guides and supports individuals through the quitting process. Research shows you are seven times more likely to end your tobacco habit with the QUITLINE than if you are trying to quit on your own.
