Alphi Bennett: ‘Gratitude’ is two-fold

— To the Editor:

I have two comments I would like to make.

First, I want to thank all of the people who voted yes for the hospital and school issues last fall (I am being sarcastic here). Especially now that we have received a bill for our property taxes. This huge increase largely stems form people who vote ‘yes’ on issues that give no bottom line on what costs will be. Seriously, we will accept any and all donations made to us to help pay an additional $500 plus property tax increase.

Second, thanks so much to Bill Harding for his article on snow removal (or lack thereof). I agree with Bill 100 percent. I, like much of the public, am tired of driving downtown to find little to no parking available due to the snow banks. I called the City, who said call the State. The State said call the City, who once again said it’s State responsibility. They suggested calling Jim Ferree. Jim said it is State or property owner responsibility. Obviously no one wants to remove the snow.

Statute 43-2-135 Division of authority over streets states:

1) The jurisdiction, control, and duty of the state, cities, cities and counties, and incorporated towns with respect to streets which are a part of the state highway system is as follows:

a) The city, city and county, and incorporated town shall exercise full responsibility for and control over any such street beyond and including the curbs and, no curb is installed, beyond the traveled way, its contiguous shoulders, and appurtenances; except that the regulation and control of driveways shall be subject to provisions of section 43-2-147.

Sounds like the City is responsible to me. I think Mayor Don Jones and Jim Ferree should maybe read the law. Would be nice if someone would get off of dead center and become responsible. It would only take one unloaded van truck to do the job.

Oops, there I go, thinking again.
