Bulldogs hockey team blanked in Durango
February 4, 2008
Durango (AP) The Moffat County Bulldogs hockey club entered this weekend averaging nearly five goals per game.
In Saturday's doubleheader at Durango, they scored none.
Sitting in third place in the Rocky Mountain Youth Hockey League at 10-1-1, the Bulldogs traveled to the home of the first-place Steamers, looking to advance further in the standings in a weekend doubleheader.
Durango had different ideas.
The Steamers (13-0-1 RMYHL) shut out and shut down the Bulldogs, winning the first game 1-0, then cruising past the visitors 6-0 in the regular season finale.
"They have a really good defense," Moffat County coach Jim Hall said. "We had trouble getting any good shots. You've got to score goals if you want to win a hockey game. My hat's off to Durango. They are a really good organization."
Junior Spencer Wayman took the loss in Game 1, senior Bryce Ponikvar in Game 2.
The Bulldogs will now settle for third place entering the playoffs beginning Feb. 18, and the first-round home game that comes along with it.
"We have a few weeks to work on what we need," Hall said. "We'll work on the defense and maybe we'll change some things up so we have more of a set offense in front of the net. We'll work on setting up down low. Something to generate a little more offense."
Moffat County's first-round opponent hasn't been decided yet. The Bulldogs (10-3-1 RMYHL) will play the team in the fifth spot in the final standings released next week.
Hall doesn't mind who they face.
"We know we can play with anybody," he said. "We have plenty of time to get it right."
