Craig Moffat County High School is sending five students to the Colorado All State Band competition Feb. 19 to 21 at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Karen Bolton, 15, Keath Fenton, 17, Sarah Bolton, 17, Kimberlynne Hill, 15, and Kyra McClellan, 15, each had to perform in a live audition to be eligible for the competition.
All five students placed in the top sections of the event.
More MCHS students qualified for the competition this year than in previous years, the students said, adding that Sarah qualified for All State Band last school year.
McClellan, a sophomore clarinet player, will be performing in the competition for the first time this year. The audition was difficult, she said, adding, "It meant so much to me."
Her goal: To take first or second chair at the event.
Hill, also a sophomore, was one of 12 students out of 300 high school flute players who qualified for All State Band this year.
Her aim is similar to McClellan's.
"I'm hoping I get a good chair," she said.
Fenton, junior and tenor saxophone player, auditioned but didn't qualify for All State Band last year.
This time around, though, was a different story.
"I'm excited," he said.
Sarah will also attend Colorado All State Orchestra Feb. 12 through 14 at the Colorado State University main campus in Fort Collins. She was one of four high school clarinet performers in the state who was chosen for the competition.
"After I found out (I qualified), I kind of bounced around for about 2 1/2 hours," she said. "I didn't know what to do with myself."
