— Moffat County roads are covered in white and brown sludge, heralding the start of plow season for local road and bridge departments.

Since the snow began falling last weekend, city and county crews have been busy clearing the roads, officials said. Now that the weather seems to have turned more pleasant, the work is done, temporarily.

Randy Call, Craig Road and Bridge Department director, said roads should be fine today across the city. Linda DeRose, county department manager, said Moffat County residents should be able to drive on all roads, as well.

However, no one expects it to stay that way.

The National Weather Service projects a chance of snow everyday from today through Saturday.

Call said the city has a standing policy to plow when there are two inches of snow on the roads. His department's first priorities are thoroughfares across town, such as Finley Lane, Green Street and Sixth Street.

After that, crews plow the steepest roads and then everything else.

"Our first priority every morning is to get the kids to school and make sure those roads are open," Call said.

The county plows about 900 miles - including 125 miles of paved roads - out of its 1,700 miles of roads, DeRose said.

DeRose added that county residents may call her department at 824-3211 if they want to request crews plow a certain road or to get more information about plowing schedules.

Call said the city does not take plow requests, but does respond when Craig Police Department officers call in to say specific roads are hazardous.
