Although its parent company recently announced 14,000 layoffs worldwide, Rio Tinto Energy America does not plan to layoff any workers, said Bob Green, director of sustainable development for the Rio Tinto Group subsidiary.
Green's company owns Colowyo Coal Company, which operates the Colowyo mine south of Craig, near the border between Moffat and Rio Blanco counties. It also owns mines in Wyoming and Montana.
Rio Tinto Group, based out of England and Australia, announced Dec. 7 it would cut jobs across the globe and slash its capital expenditure budget in a response to worldwide financial problems.
Green added that Rio Tinto Group no longer is actively trying to sell Colowyo, though the company has searched for buyers in the past.
