The Moffat County High School varsity girls basketball team concluded its tournament play Saturday in Vernal, Utah, earning a split in its final two games.

Moffat County finished the season-opening event with a 1-2 record.

The Bulldogs rebounded from Friday nights tournament-opening two-point loss against Ogden, running past North Sanpete High school, 59-39, on Saturday morning.

After losing by two the game before, "we knew that we had to come together," MCHS coach Craig Mortensen said.

They did.

Moffat County turned a two-point halftime lead into a second-half free-for-all, outscoring NSHS by 18 in the final 24 minutes.

"Our defense really shut them down there in the second half," Mortensen said. "They had a hard time scoring, and we were making some shots."

Senior Courtney Edington led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Kylie Bauman pitched in with 14 and Ariel Sanchez added 10.

The final game of the four-team tourney didn't go so well.

The Bulldogs fell, 45-36, to defending 4A Utah state champion Wasatch High School.

Down by three buckets entering the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs couldn't quite close the gap, and late free throws by Wasatch sealed the game.

"You know, we actually played a really good game," Mortensen said. "It was just a couple of possessions here and a couple of possessions there, that made the difference. We couldn't get their lead under four points, and it turned into a free-throw shooting contest at the end."

Bauman led the Bulldogs' offense against Wasatch, tallying 12 points. Edington finished with 10, senior Danette Crofts, six.

"We learned that we all have to step it up," Mortensen said of the team's first road trip of the 2008-09 season.

Moffat County is in the midst of seven road games in eight days.

The team enjoyed a break Sunday, but returns to practice today before leaving Tuesday to compete in a tournament in Grandview.
