A couple of hours or a couple of minutes: New Moffat County High School students can decide how long to stay at Friday's new student open house.

From 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the high school, 900 Finley Lane, incoming freshmen and other new students will have a chance to meet their teachers and begin settling in, said Paula Duzik, MCHS counselor.

"They can come with their parents; they can come with their friends," Duzik said. "They can stay for two hours; they can stay for five minutes."

New students will be equipped with information they need to start the school year, from class schedules to locker assignments. And, if a student so chooses, he or she can get a tour of the school from an MCHS Student Council member.

Between 35 and 40 new students at multiple grade levels are enrolled at MCHS this year.

The high school's freshman class also could stand to grow from last year. During the 2007-08 school year, MCHS hosted eight freshman mentoring classes, meaning there were about 160 students in the freshman class.

This year, however, the high school will offer 10 freshman mentoring classes, Duzik said, meaning 20 to 30 more freshmen could be enrolled at MCHS this year.

However, Friday won't be the last time freshmen and their families can get information about MCHS.

A freshmen parent meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. Sept. 4 in the high school library. The meeting is designed to help ease students' transition into high school, Duzik said.

Parents at the meeting will be provided with information they need for the new school year, including bell schedules, teacher contact information and introductions to their children's freshmen mentors.

For more information about Friday's new student open house or the freshmen parent meeting, call MCHS at 824-7036.
