Chris Gingrich: Merits to picking QB late in the game

Are you one of those fantasy football players who uses the early rounds to solidify your running back and receiver positions while putting off picking a quarterback until the mid to late rounds? It can work, and sometimes with great results. Take last year for example, when Derek Anderson was ignored until the late rounds of fantasy drafts and proved to be a great pick for owners who took a chance on him. When talent and opportunity meet in the NFL, you can look for a player to have a great season. The players I'm going to list have talent and will be given an opportunity this season to prove themselves in the NFL.
Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers - I'm pretty sure most fantasy players are aware of Rodgers, but it's a safe bet that he will rack up quite a bit of passing yards this season. He has two excellent wide receivers to throw to in Jennings and Driver, one of the best offensive lines in the league, a strong running game and a great defense. What more could a quarterback need? If all goes well, look for Rodgers to end up as one of the top 10 quarterbacks this season.
Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia Eagles - McNabb has always been one of the best quarterback picks until recently. People are starting to sleep on him, and his average draft position is now in the sixth round. He's been boasting lately about how he thinks the Eagles can win their division this year and how good he thinks his team is. McNabb is one of the few quarterbacks, who have, and still can, average 20 fantasy points per game. Be sure to pick up a good backup quarterback if you do pick McNabb just in case he goes down.
Brodie Croyle, Kansas City Chiefs - If you're looking for a real long shot at the quarterback position then I think I have your guy. Last year, the Chiefs quarterbacks combined to creep into the top 20 realm, but this year, it's all Croyle. He has Larry Johnson returning, which will open up some passing lanes for him to target another sleeper Dwayne Bowe, and the always-reliable Tony Gonzalez.
Alex Smith/Shaun Hill, San Francisco 49ers - It's going to be a battle for the starting quarterback gig in San Francisco. Smith has thrown 31 interceptions in 30 starts for San Francisco. Hill, on the other hand, played for the Amsterdam Admirals in NFL Europa in 2003 where he led the league in passing yards and was second in touchdowns. My money is on Hill right now because I think he's a better fit for Mike Martz's system.
