Patrick Wayne Germond: Security concerns

August 16, 2008

To the editor:

I am writing concerning the article on security for the courthouse. I'm glad to see the commissioners are at the threshold of providing security. They still are dragging their feet just a tad, though. I know they are very, very frugal with our tax dollars. This is outstanding; this puts them head and shoulders above Washington, D.C., politicians, in my book. However, one basic responsibility of government is the security of the people they govern.

I see Moffat County and DOLA are going to spend a combined total of $74,000 to research whether a new building is needed, or if add-ons are needed at the safety center for the courts. Is that thing even paid for yet? Moffat County taxpayers are being nickeled and dimed, guys. We should at least let the ink dry on one check before we start shopping again.

Here's a funny thought: Maybe we should stop construction on the hospital, draw up new plans, and build an enormous sky scraper right where the hospital was going to be. My kids want a water slide, so add that onto it. We can call it the Safety Hospital Judicial Water Slide. It has to be painted my and many others' favorite color, mossy oak.

Seriously, a good and permanent fix needs to be made. In the meantime, we have our judicial structure hanging out in the wind. Moffat County, ask yourself this question. Do you want our courts to take a hard stance on crime, and do what needs to be done? Do you want your DA to kick butt and take names? Do you want the clerks to be safe? If your answer is 'yes,' then immediate action needs to be taken. A compensatory step would be a security guard with a Taser and a medal detector wand. This would be a step up from the nothing we have now. I'll donate the wand. The Craig Police Department, and Moffat County Sheriff's Department can come up with a Taser. The courthouse needs something during the five-week interim, until we find out about the grant you're seeking to pay for full-time staff. Come on commissioners, you did just find a lot of new tax dollars for our county from the energy industry.

You are better than this, commissioners, and the people in that building have earned better protection than this.

Patrick Wayne Germond,

Craig

P.S. Please add a Sonic to that Safety Hospital Judicial Water Slide mossy oak sky scraper wildlife refuge center. Thank You.
