Buchanan named MCHS assistant boys soccer coach

— Less than one week on the job as new Moffat County High School athletic director, Rick Penner hired his first coach.

Shannon Buchanan was introduced Thursday as the new boys assistant soccer coach, joining first-year head coach Rusty Cox on the sidelines.

"We put out the information, she filled out an application, I met with her and the head coach, I looked at all the other applications and went with that decision," Penner said. "She's got a lot of experience coaching, and I think that's why I went that way. I think she's a student-athlete-focused coach, who focuses on the morals and the values that athletics should really be about."

Cox and Buchanon take over for last year's staff, Seth Young and Alegra Yager, who resigned their positions more than three months ago.

The fall season begins in less than a week, and Cox said he is excited to finally have the assistant position filled, and even more so considering he is familiar with Buchanan's approach to the game.

"Yeah, I'm definitely glad" we got that out of the way, Cox said. "I've known her for at least seven years. She's coached traveling teams and played college ball, so I think that's going to be a big help to our program."

Cox said Buchanan's experience should bring a "whole new side" to the high school game.

"I think between the two of us," he said, "it's going to help both of us. It's kind of one of those things where she'll have an idea, and I'll have an idea, and we'll combine them together and make the best of it."

Buchanan was unavailable for comment.

Cox and Buchanon take over a program that went 6-20-2 the past two seasons under Young, missing the postseason each year.

"We are going to change the way people look at Bulldogs soccer," Cox said. "What has happened in the past is in the past. We are going to start over and build a solid, winning program, that hopefully will be dominant like the younger program."

Cox guided the Craig Storm U-14 boys program to an undefeated record this season on its way to the season-ending tournament championship in Steamboat Springs.

Fall practice for the team and its two new coaches begins at 5:45 p.m. Monday at Loudy-Simpson Park.
