The Craig 100th Birthday Committee selected a centennial logo Thursday night and plans to spend $15,000 buying merchandise for sale during the 100 days of celebration. The logo will be fitted onto most centennial merchandise.
The 100th birthday festivities initially kickoff Jan. 12 with a beard growing competition 100 days before the April 21, 2008 birthday. The beard contestants will present their growth on the birthday, preceding events lasting until the weekend of July 27, which is 100 days after.
The committee chose two designs, one for the logo and a large, detailed drawing as a basis for the poster design.
The Craig Police Department will use the logo as part of a centennial year badge, Mayor Don Jones said.
"This design will fit well on the badge they picked out," he added.
The design competition winner is Troy DeRose, who won $50 for his effort.
DeRose also will be tapped to create a picture for the backside of Craig's centennial coin. Several suggestions were brought forward, including a representation of Yampa Avenue and one of the Center of Craig.
"The Center of Craig is going to be about the oldest building in town," Jones said. "I think that would be about perfect."
A coin from a Utah-based manufacturer won out over a Canadian company's sample. The selected design is full color on both sides.
Committee members were unsure of how much merchandise to purchase and decided it would be best to organize a presale to gauge interest. All merchandise will be available in the presale.
Prices have not been finalized.
Jones would like to see advertisements in the newspapers and on the radio in the next few weeks. The Craig Chamber of Commerce will take presale orders and keep track of the figures.
The committee plans to send a bid out to designers and embroiders to work on the merchandise. It is determined to have local businesses produce the goods.
"This way, all that money stays local," said Beth Gilchrist, committee member.
