To the Editor:
Twelve members of the Moffat County High School FFA boarded buses at 4 a.m. Oct. 23 and headed out for an experience of a lifetime. By 10 p.m., they had driven and flown halfway across the country to Indianapolis to compete and represent their school at the National FFA Convention.
I was fortunate enough to accompany this group as an adult chaperone. The three-member meat judging team competed against meats teams from across the country and completed a written exam and carcass judging event. They return proudly to Moffat County with a silver award for their efforts.
Other local FFA members attended the leadership workshops and general sessions highlighting the contributions of our youth in agriculture. This National FFA Convention was attended by nearly 35,000 members of the FFA. Representatives from nearly every college and university with agriculture programs in the United States and Canada were present to discuss educational opportunities in agriculture. Agri-businesses were also present to demonstrate the endless possibilities present before and after college to apply their interest to agriculture. Night time entertainment was excellent and, needless to say, Montgomery Gentry and The Beach Boys, as well as two sessions of Extreme Bull Riding, played to exclusive FFA "sold out" crowds in the RCA Dome. Many events were televised live on RFD-TV.
I would like to express my appreciation to the parents of this group of young men and women. You can truly be proud of the way they conducted themselves in every situation. They left each event questioning how they could apply the concepts given to their personal lives in an effort to expand the understanding of agriculture. They demonstrated the good manners taught in your homes by opening doors for others and saying please and thank you.
They kept in touch with each other and looked out for each other in the endless sea of blue jackets roaming the city of Indianapolis.
I would also like to thank Brothers Meat Packing for allowing the Meats Team to practice at your facility, Mr. Murr and Mr. Hadden for your commitment to Ag Ed and to Moffat County High School for allowing these students the wonderful opportunity to attend the National FFA Convention.
