— Mike McNicol was leading three quarters of the way through his race in the Dawson Invitational on Thursday in Lafayette, approaching a hair-pin turn obstructed by foliage.

Coach Todd Trapp was there waiting for his No. 1 runner.

"I told him to turn it on," Trapp said. "He was ahead by 10 meters over the second place runner."

By the time his closest competitor turned that same corner, McNicol was 30 meters away.

"He turned on the afterburners," Trapp said. "He left him in his dust and won easily."

Such was the case for the entire Moffat County cross-country team, as the boys and girls squads each claimed team victories in the last regular-season meet of the year.

Alicia Nelson finished second, as four Bulldogs girls runners placed in the top 10.

McNicol claimed his third meet victory of the season, tying Nelson for the team lead.

"I couldn't be any happier with the team." Trapp said. "The kids are excited and feeling confident right now."

The Bulldogs are peaking at the right time. Moffat County travels Saturday to Delta to compete in state regionals.
