Craig A joint investigation conducted by the Craig Police Department and Moffat County Sheriff's Office into a 27-year-old Craig woman's report that she was kidnapped and assaulted has prompted criminal charges against four suspects.
The 14th Judicial District Attorney's Office filed eight felony charges Friday against the suspects: Megan Crook, Steven Casias, Ramona Brassard and James Barry.
Prosecutors said the four are charged with criminal attempt to commit second-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit second-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, conspiracy to commit second-degree assault, robbery, criminal extortion and menacing.
They also face a misdemeanor count of third-degree assault.
The alleged victim reported Sept. 19 that she was assaulted a day before, Sept. 18, by Crook and Brassard in a parking lot in the 400 block of Yampa Avenue. She also told police that Barry, Brassard and Casias took her to an area south of Loudy-Simpson Park at about 10 p.m. on Sept. 18.
There, the victim was strangled, assaulted and "threatened not to advise police" of the incidents, Police Department Capt. Jerry DeLong said. She later was taken to a home in the 2200 block of West Third Street, where items were taken from her and she was not allowed to leave, DeLong said.
She was taken home Sept. 19, and reported the incident to police at about 11:20 a.m.
Other arrests in the case are pending, the police captain said.
Barry, 31, and Crook, 21, have had previous run-ins with authorities this year.
Barry was arrested in April for his alleged involvement in a fight outside Mathers Bar. He was booked into jail on six charges, including second-degree assault on a public official and criminal mischief.
Crook, who has a prior felony conviction for criminal mischief, was booked into the jail in August on suspicion of parole violation, unlawful distribution and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Information on the status of those cases, and whether Brassard and/or Casias have previous offenses, was not available Monday due to the court being closed.
