'Backwoods' in name only

— Seizing a recent opportunity, the Backwoods Diner, 337 W. Victory Way, expanded to make room for 30 more seats.

When American Family Insurance vacated the area next to the local eatery some weeks ago, Backwoods owner Theresa Hammonds talked to her landlord and knocked out the wall separating her diner from the free space.

Hammonds bought the Backwoods Diner a little more than two years ago. Additions are nothing new.

She added a lunch menu first, then a few more breakfast items. Lately, she designed a dinner menu and expanded hours until 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Recently hired cook, Randall Brown, of Texas, has the responsibility for many dinner items. Brown should be able to satisfy everybody, Hammonds said.

"He can cook steaks pretty good," she said.

Backwoods Diner is looking to hire about two permanent wait staff positions after the seating increase, and three to four people temporarily for the hunting season.

Warner at law

Matt Warner started Oct. 1 as a new practicing attorney for Romney Law Office. He joins owner Sherman Romney as a general law practitioner.

Warner originally is from Utah and graduated from the University of Nebraska law school. This is his first job as a practicing attorney.

"I was a tax auditor before law school," Warner said. "A lot of what (Romney and I) would like to do in the future is business law. Even work up some estate planning."

A small town appealed to Warner and his wife, who have one child. Both grew up in small towns and thought Craig would be a good place to raise a family.

The couple has liked their short time spent in Craig, Warner said.

"It's been fun and I've enjoyed the people," he said. "The people here I've met have been extremely nice and down to earth."

Romney wanted a second attorney because his practice has been very busy lately, Romney said. Warner's background in business and accounting made him a "great candidate" for hire, though he will work on a variety of cases including civil and criminal law, Romney added.

Plus, he is a nice guy, Romney said.

"I just felt like he'd be a good fit in and for the community," he said. "He's an easy guy to work with."
