Highway 40 crash victim identified

— A Craig woman killed in a Monday morning car crash has been identified as 24-year-old Teodora Diaz Simon. The Colorado State Patrol also identified a Steamboat Springs man injured in the crash as Russell Blackhurst, 30.

The State Patrol withheld the victims' names Monday while attempts were being made to notify their families. Blackhurst suffered serious skeletal, head and internal injuries in the crash, according to the State Patrol. Yampa Valley Medical Center spokeswoman Christine McKelvie said Blackhurst was treated and released from the hospital Tuesday.

The accident occurred at about 7:55 a.m. on U.S. Highway 40 near mile marker 119, about two miles west of Milner. According to police reports, Simon was driving a Honda Accord eastbound, and Blackhurst was westbound in a Toyota Corolla station wagon.

Trooper Kirk Gardner investigated the crash. Gardner said the Accord began to rotate counterclockwise while exiting a left-hand curve and skidded into the westbound lane, where it collided with the Corolla. Simon died of her injuries at the scene.

The crash was one of about a dozen in Routt County on Monday morning after overnight and morning snowfall. Although the weather likely contributed to the crash that killed Simon, a news release from Gardner also cited her speed and inadequate winter tires on her car as contributing factors to the crash. There was falling snow and snow-covered roadways at the time of the crash.

First, let me offer condolences to the Simon family. I can't imagine losing a loved one in an auto accident. I'm so sorry for your loss and your deep grief.

Once again, the Craig Daily Press continues its tradition of printing fluff and never asking the hard questions or printing the whole truth. We are hearing that Ms. Diaz-Simon had no auto insurance, was in the country illegally and hence also had no driving privileges. Are we hearing false rumors? Or is the paper just useless?

We are all sorry for the injuries suffered. We grieve for the loss of life. And we rage that the government does nothing about illegal immigration. BUT--------that does not belong on this forum. This is about a loss of life and a severe injury. God bless them all. Condolences to all. Prayers for all. There is (was) a forum on the readers blogs about the spanish pages this newspaper prints. I didn't notice anyone here commenting on that. Wonder why?

It all boils down to incidence and prevlence. While both illegal and legal citizens drive illegally, carelessly, and get in wrecks, it would appear that a small share of the population (illegals from mexico, germany, brazil, australia -- where ever...) have accounted for a disproportionately large portion of the trafic fatalities in this area. Most legal citizens do have to take drivers training, pass a written and driving test, and then carrie auto insurance (not all, but most will just because of the accountability factor), while illegals have little incentive to take driving courses or tests to prove they are good drivers.

This begs the question, as more immigrants come into this country, are our roads safe? We pass laws to keep people who are impaired from drinking off the road and they have stiff penalties that follow. Is someone who hasn't had training just as dangerous as a drunk driver?

Now being mexican or chinese does not make you a bad driver, but not having the proper training and experience does.

Yes we have an immigration problem in this country. It is impacting everything from public works to highway safety. To say it isn't or to say people are ignorant because they are tyring to bring it to others attention is in it self ignorant.

Ask yourself this question - If we have Germans, British, Mexican, or Columbians on the road driving and they have little or no experience does it make our roads less safe? What if 1 in 5 of the cars on the road were driven by 14 year olds? Would our roads be even less safe? It's really not much different between having a 14 year old behind the wheel and 29 year old who hasn't driven before.

addlip - either I am confused, or you are. I agree SOME immigrants are lawfully present in the US...but the immigrants referred to as ILLEGAL are unquestionably UNlawfully present in the US.

I would feel a lot better about immigrants that are documented. All US citizens are documented. I never thought I would say this, as I am typically anti Big Brother, but I think we need a universal National ID card. Anyone on American soil needs a valid ID.

Way to go Gus. I totally agree. It really is black and white. Not legal ship them out, legal welcome them. I think alot of people think with their feelings instead of good old common sense.

WHAT IF 20 MILLION ILLEGAL ALIENS VACATED AMERICA?*

By Frosty Wooldridge October 29, 2007 NewsWithViews. com

Tina Griego, journalist for the Denver Rocky Mountain News wrote a column titled, 'Mexican visitor's lament' -- 10/25/07.

She interviewed Mexican journalist Evangelina Hernandez while visiting Denver last week. Hernandez said,

'They (illegal aliens) pay rent, buy groceries, buy clothes...what happens to your country's economy if 20 million people go away?'

That's a good question -- it deserves an answer. Over 80 percent of Americans demand secured borders and illegal migration stopped. But what would happen if all 20 million or more vacated America? The answers may surprise you!

In California, if 3.5 million illegal aliens moved back to Mexico, it would leave an extra $10.2 billion to spend on overloaded school systems, bankrupted hospitals and overrun prisons. It would le ave highways cleaner, safer and less congested. Everyone could understand one another as English became the dominate language again. In Colorado, 500,000 illegal migrants, plus their 300,000 kids and grand-kids -- would move back 'home,' mostly to Mexico. That would save Coloradans an estimated $2 billion (other experts say $7 BIL) annually in taxes that pay for schooling, medical, social-services and incarceration costs. It means 12,000 gang members would vanish out of Denver alone. Colorado would save more than $20 million in prison costs, and the terror that those 7,300 alien criminals set upon local citizens. Denver Officer Don Young and hundreds of Colorado victims would not have suffered death, accidents, rapes and other crimes by illegals. Denver Public Schools would not suffer a 67 percent drop out/flunk out rate via thousands of illegal alien students speaking 41 different languages. At least 200,000 v ehicles would vanish from our gridlocked cities in Colorado. Denver's four percent unemployment rate would vanish as our working poor would gain jobs at a living wage. In Florida, 1.5 million illegals would return the Sunshine State back to America, the rule of law and English.

Part 2

In Chicago, Illinois, 2.1 million illegals would free up hospitals, schools, prisons and highways for a safer, cleaner and more crime-free experience.

If 20 million illegal aliens returned 'home,' the U.S. economy would return to the rule of law. Employers would hire legal American citizens at a living wage. Everyone would pay their fair share of taxes because they wouldn't be working off the books. That would result in an additional $401 billion in IRS income taxes collected annually, and an equal amount for local state and city coffers.

No more push '1' for Spanish or '2' for English. No more confusion in American schools th at now must contend with over 100 languages that degrade the educational system for American kids. Our overcrowded schools would lose more than two million illegal alien kids at a cost of billions in ESL and free breakfasts and lunches.

We would lose 500,000 illegal criminal alien inmates at a cost of more than $1.6 billion annually. That includes 15,000 MS-13 gang members who distribute $130 billion in drugs annually would vacate our country. In cities like L.A., 20,000 members of the '18th Street Gang' would vanish from our nation. No more Mexican forgery gangs for ID theft from Americans! No more foreign rapists and child molesters!

Losing more than 20 million people would clear up our crowded highways and gridlock. Cleaner air and less drinking and driving American deaths by illegal aliens!

Over $80 billion annually wouldn't return to their home countries by cash transfers. Illegal migrants earned half that money untaxed, which further drains America's economy -- which currently suffers an $8.7 trillion debt.

At least 400,000 anchor babies would not be born in our country, costing us $109 billion per year per cycle. At least 86 hospitals in California, Georgia and Florida would still be operating instead of being bankrupted out of existence because illegals pay nothing via the EMTOLA Act. Americans wouldn't suffer thousands of TB and hepatitis cases rampant in our country---brought in by illegals unscreened at our borders

Our cities would see 20 million less people driving, polluting and grid locking our cities. It would also put the 'progressives' on the horns of a dilemma; illegal aliens and their families cause 11 percent of our greenhouse gases.

Part 3

Over one million of Mexico's poorest citizens now live inside and along our border from Brownsville, Texas to San Diego, California in what the New York Time s called, 'colonias' or new neighborhoods. Trouble is, those living areas resemble Bombay and Calcutta where grinding poverty, filth, diseases, drugs, crimes, no sanitation and worse. They live without sewage, clean water, streets, electricity, roads or any kind of sanitation. The New York Times reported them to be America's new 'Third World' inside our own country. Within 20 years, at their current growth rate, they expect 20 million residents of those colonias. (I've seen them personally in Texas and Arizona; it's sickening beyond anything you can imagine.) By enforcing our laws, we could repatriate them back to Mexico.

We invite 20 million aliens to go home, fix their own countries and/or make a better life in Mexico. We invite a million people into our country legally more than all other countries combined annually. We cannot and must not allow anarchy at our borders, more anarchy within our borders and growing la wlessness at every level in our nation.

It's time to stand up for our country, our culture, our civilization and our way of life.

Has the Craig Daily Press come forward yet with the rest of the highway 40 crash story?

How can we be informed citizens who make informed decisions with the pathetic paper that we have to rely on?

One of our former Supreme Court justices said that "sunshine is the best disinfectant". Where is our "sunshine"? The Daily Press isn't providing any. All it provides is fluff. Fluffy clouds.

And two pages a week of fluffy Spanish.

Here's an idea.....get a court reporter. Get an investigative reporter. Ask the hard questions. Be thorough. Spread some sunshine on the dark places that need it.

The Daily Press IS part of the problem.

jdsd00-Your figures are low. There are over 500,000 illegals in Arizona alone. There are over 3 million in California. Texas is probably worse-They have a larger border with Mexico. New Mexico has the same problems. After the Border Patrol shut down the Altar Valley trails in southeast Arizona, that the drug runners were using, they started coming through the Tohono O'Odhan Indian Reservation.southwest of Tuscon. The Indians are being over run on their own reservation. Shadow Wolves-Indians from 7 tribes work for the Department of Homeland Security. They are trying to stem the flow of illegals from across the border. Google:Shadow Wolves. Last year the Border Patrol siezed over 440 tons of marijuna coming over the border in this area. The Mexican military fires on border agents to give cover to these drug runners. These people are not immigrants! They are illegal aliens. There is a lot of information on what they cost this country-google cost of illegal aliens. If you grant them amnisty, it only costs us more-then they qualify for more government programs. Wake up people! This is a real problem in this country.

Please-To the left of readers forum at the top of the page is a little faint blue arrow. Mine is actually inside the search box. Click on it and you will get a drop down menu. Go to readers blogs. There is an item there about why the DP prints spanish pages every week. I couldn't understand why hardly anyone was posting there until Taylor told me he didn't know it was there. Please check it out.

Yes, trumpsuit, my ancestors were from another country. They were from Ireland and Germany. I have documentation that they came through Ellis Island too. If we give them all documentation, do you realize how much that will raise taxes? They will qualify for more government programs. They are already placing a terrible burden on our taxes. Why don't we just do away with all our immigration policies? Just open the flood gates and not worry about it. This is the land of plenty! Everyone wants to come here. Wouldn't Osama just love that! Do you think that it is just people from Mexico that are crossing our southern border? You really need to educate yourself. It isn't just poor workers that want to get into this country. It is people who want to do us harm. It is gang members, killers, people who could care less about our laws. Most are people who just want to improve their lives, but what about the others?

We are sorry for the loss of life-it's the most horrible thing on earth to lose any life so suddenly in such a horrible way. You can't imagine the loss unless you have lived through it. I know the pain that Ms. Simon's family is going through. I'm sorry. I am also sorry for all the suffering that Mr. Blackhurst and his family are going through. I wish that this discussion on legal and illegal people had not been on this page-it should have gone into the discussions forum section, but it is here. This should have been about a horrible accident and the lives it has shattered. Maybe-if I can figure out how, I can start a discussion forum about this. This is a very passionate problem, but this page should be about an accident in our area that took one life and turned another upside down. Please, Please, let's get this immigration off this page and start it somewhere else. Use this page to keep track of updates on this story and please let us know what we can do to help. I'm so very sorry for all involved in this horrible accident.

Please, under Readers Forums inside government is a blog or what ever you call it for border control opinions. Please take it off this page. You cannot hate this young woman who lost her life. You don't have to like it that she was here illegally, but for pete's sake-the loss of life-the loss of anyone's life is a horrible thing. Pray for everyone involved in this accident-pray for their families. But get the hate off this page.

oofcboy-Did you hit the nail on the head or what! Great post! They don't want to become a part of our society, they don't want to do something about theirs. They have elections. Why not fix their own country. Why trash ours? But then, I wonder that about the Iraqi's too. We are trying to help those people and yet all the ones that came to this country are still here. What gives?

I have to say I would rather have Gladys as my neighbor than kielbasa. I too was raised "family first". I thought moving the benefit to it's own thread a kind gesture. I did not view it as Gladys setting herself as a martyr. As for insensitive remarks, I have read this thread in it's entirety and have been more offended by insensitve remarks made by others. At least Gladys's remarks were in defense and support of a fellow American. I guess I just read the words, not between the lines adding my own spin.

I read in the Pilot this morning that the "illegal" car was owned by a Gunnison woman. I am curious to know if the Gunnison woman was aware of an illegal driving the car? If so, I believe she should share in the responsibility.

After all is said and done, the bottom line is that a woman arrived in this country illegally, probably used false documents to obtain work, drove an automobile with no license or insurance, endangering the life of good law abiding legal citizens. At what point in time do we think this woman might have decided to pay any attention to any laws of this country and become a law abiding citizen ? Lawlessness just escalates with each incident.

0

grannyrett 7 years ago

Kielbasa-If you knew anything about me, you would have read the posts I have done on the readers blog about the daily press spanish pages. I am totally anti illegal aliens. If you would get off your soapbox, you might be able to see the problem they are causing this country. All your posts have nothing to do with anything except going after Gladys. Gladys has hit the nail on every post she has done. She isn't the only one. There are a lot of people in this country that are tired of the gangs, the property damage caused by overcrowding in rented houses, the failure to pay taxes, the burden on our welfare system, the burden on our school system, the pregnant women coming over the border just to have a baby in this country, the extra traffic. Low estimates put the illegal population around 12 million. It is estimated that over 500,000 are crossing our borders every year. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that none of these have drivers licenses or insurance. Makes me feel real safe on the roads-not! If we do not get this under control, we will not be The United States of America much longer. We will be the Divided States of Mexico. Open your eyes and use your brain to think.

0

grannyrett 7 years ago

niko-Do you really think they are going to get a license and insurance just because it's the law? They showed they have no respect for our laws by coming into this country illegally. You really think that if it became legal for them to have a license, they would run down in hordes and get it. Then-because it's the law, they would hurry to the local insurance office and get that too? Wake up! They haven't followed the law since they stepped foot into the United States.
