Keeping in check

Love INC sponsors free car clinic

— For some, a car's engine is a mystical force propelling them down the road. If a problem were to arise, keeping it running could be a bewildering challenge.

For others, it's not lack of know-how, but possibly a physical handicap keeping them from doing the simple maintenance to keep an engine healthy.

And that is where Love INC steps in with their free car care clinic available for single mothers, seniors and residents who have disabilities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 1150 W. Ninth St.

Love INC, founded 30 years ago, is a nationwide Christian clearing house that represents many of the churches in the community.

"I think it's a really wonderful thing for the community," said Patricia Jones, executive director of Love INC. "People are glad to have a place to take their cars."

About seven to 10 volunteers will do small car maintenance, such as checking and leveling off fluids, general engine look-over, checking antifreeze in preparation for the winter, checking tires, and making sure the horn and windshield wipers are working.

Any major maintenance will be deferred to an auto mechanic.

"These are things people need help with," Jones said. "It was a heart to serve God that led them to do this."

The clinic is offered four times a year, with three or four openings still available by appointment for Saturday.
