Kerry Alonso: Son's trumpet playing is music to my ears

A few months ago I submitted a fun letter "apologizing" for my son's trumpet playing as we had banished him to the yard and garage and the entire neighborhood got an earful.

After some urging from family and friends and Tony's band instructor, Mr. Craig Smith, I must submit a retraction.

Not only can Tony play the trumpet very well, we can actually sing along (maybe I should apologize to the neighbors for that, though).

Thanks, Tony, for proving to us that you really could do it, even though you thought you never would get the hang of it.

It is amazing to me that one person can take a room full of students who have never played an instrument and in just a few short months they are making music. The sixth-grade band is awesome and Mr. Smith is, too.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Smith and Mrs. Firestone at CIS for doing such and amazing job teaching our students music and music appreciation.

Music is a very important part of education, and I'm afraid that it may be lost to our future generations if we don't completely support the music and art programs in our schools today.

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, so when you see a teacher, tell him or her just how much you appreciate what they do.

They deserve to hear it.

One last "note," I would like to invite the community to see just what a great job Mr. Smith has done with these young musicians by coming and supporting the sixth-grade band at its final concert of the year on May 17, at 7 p.m. at Craig Intermediate School.

Smile. It is a beautiful day.

Kerry Alonso
