Bill Harding: Time to talk about veterans clinic coming to Craig

The VA medical center staff from Grand Junction will meet with local residents at 1 p.m. at the Shadow Mountain Headquarters for American Legion Post 62 on Friday, May 18.

This meeting is to address all issues regarding the establishment of the Veteran Clinic in Craig this September.

Hometown Heroes Picnic is soon

The Hometown Heroes Picnic is rapidly approaching. It is scheduled for May 19 at the City Park complex behind the VFW.

We will need assistance setting up tents for shade or inclement weather.

So far I have had only two calls regarding those presently serving their country in foreign lands, on the high seas, or in the skies over hostile zones.

Watch for the full-page ads in the Craig Daily Press that will address the schedule of events. Those ads started Wednesday on Page 10.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Property tax exemption (Ref E)

The application packets are in my office. If you think you may be entitled -- or we previously have spoken regarding this veteran benefit, contact me as soon as possible.

If you haven't submitted a claim by the time deadline arrives, it will be too late. Don't put this off any longer.

Echo Taps, Armed Forces Day on May 19

Echo Taps will be observed May 19, which also is Armed Forces Day.

Hundreds of volunteer brass players are being sought to perform the 24 notes of "Taps" at all VA National Cemeteries, State Veteran Cemeteries and American Battle Cemeteries overseas.

The VA National Cemetery Administration & Bugles Across America is organizing the event and hopes the event will interest brass players to volunteer to perform taps at this event, and at the military funerals of veterans throughout the year.

If you are interested, contact me, and I will get you in touch with these groups. Echo Taps Worldwide is a very visible way to honor our deceased veterans and the important tradition of a live bugler to play the final military honors a veteran can receive.

Register for new Craig veterans clinic

With the clinic coming this fall, all Northwest Colorado and southern Wyoming veterans who have never sought healthcare from the VA hospital system or those who have not used the VAMC in Grand Junction for more than three years should come and register for this veteran benefit so the clinic meets its service goals.

We missed a larger clinic presence because we just missed the magic number for a full-time outpatient clinic.

If you haven't enrolled into the VA healthcare system to date, and are an honorably discharged veteran, you have affected the outcome for this local veteran healthcare facility and the services that will be provided.

American Legion, VFW national conventions

National conventions for the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars are scheduled for this summer.

The American Legion and Sons of the Legion are gathering in Reno, Nev., and starts Aug. 24. This follows the American Legion Legacy Run by its motorcycle group from Indianapolis, starting Aug. 19. The ride and promotional events along the way will raise funds for donations to support the American Legacy Scholarship program that assists with the college funds for the children of service personnel who have died on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001.

The VFW National Convention will be held in Kansas City from Aug. 18 to 23.

This follows the group's state convention in Colorado Springs, which runs from June 20 to June 23.

The local VFW District No. 9 semi-annual meeting is at 11 a.m. Saturday in Craig.

All current paid members are eligible to attend these functions and are encouraged to join with other veterans from across the USA at these major functions.
