Get ready 'cause here they come.

Classic rock band Rare Earth hits the stage at 6 p.m. today at the Craig City Park, performing top 10 billboard hits such as "Get Ready," "(I Know) I'm losing you," and "I Just Want To Celebrate" -- songs that mark Rare Earth's primetime years.

Having a nationally recognized band in Craig is just one reason to come, KRAI owner and general manager Frank Hanel said. Another good reason Hanel pointed out -- the concert is free.

"Their classic rock sounds will have Craig residents on their feet Saturday," Hanel said. "Rare Earth is a great '70s rock band. The community will like and know their songs."

Dave Pike, the Craig Parks and Recreation director chair of Whittle the Wood Rendezvous and self-proclaimed music junkie, picked the band.

Country, classic rock, oldies and alternative music are some genres preferred by Craig residents, Pike believes.

"Rare Earth is a perfect crossover band for Craig," Pike said. "I went back to my rock-n-roll roots of my youth when choosing the band."

Rare Earth was the "only successful white band" signed by Motown Records, Rare Earth sax player Gill Bridges said.

From Craig to Illinois, Illinois to Las Vegas, age is only a number for these performers.

"Our love for music keeps us performing," Bridges said.

Bridges is the lone original band member. The newest members are Randy Burghdoff, Ivan Greilick, Mike Burner and Floyd Stokes.

"We have performed with the best of them," Bridges said, "Diane Ross, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye."

Rare Earth apparel, CDs and other merchandise will be sold throughout the performance.

Rare Earth will be signing autographs after the show, scheduled to end at 8 p.m.

Hanel and Pike said Whittle the Wood's various attractions will contribute to the community's involvement in the event.

"It's not just a concert," Hanel said. "It's Whittle the Wood, a great community event."

Pike agrees, "The concert is the icing on the cake."
