Helmer Ernest Zschach passed away May 31, 2007.
Helmer was born June 1, 1912, in Arkansas. After losing his parents at a young age he was taken in by the Pelley family.
He lived with and worked for the Pelley family on ranches north and west of Craig. He married Edith E. Brannon on May 20, 1936, in Craig. Soon they moved to the ranch north of Craig, where they worked for the remainder of their lives. They transformed the brush-covered landscape into a working farm to raise grain and hay.
Helmer enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He thoroughly enjoyed all wildlife from small squirrels to large elk. He would spend hours watching the wildlife in the fields and was thrilled if an opportunity would arise in which he could hunt something.
Helmer had a fondness for his machinery, especially his tractors. He loved the land and would check his crops daily to see if they were growing.
Helmer was a longtime member of the Masonic Yampa Lodge No. 88 and Craig Soil Conservation District.
Helmer was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edith, his parents, one brother and one sister.
Funeral services were held June 4, 2007, at the First Christian Church with Pastor Mervin Johnson officiating. Pallbearers were Glen Miller, Jim Simpson, Gary Brannan,
Ron Snowden, Bill Green and Chad Green. Interment was at the Little Bear Ranch.
