Drew Turner: Sports feedback wanted

June 7, 2007

Greetings.

This is a belated welcome from me, Drew Turner, the Craig Daily Press' sports reporter. I have been a Craig resident and the sports reporter here for four months.

After graduating from Washington State University in the spring of 2005, I began my journalism career as a sports reporter at the Marysville Globe and Arlington Times. They are small, weekly sister newspapers about 40 minutes north of Seattle.

After 14 months of covering four high schools for two newspapers, I moved up the corporate ladder into the world of dailies. That is, I came to Craig.

While Moffat County High School and its respective athletic program keeps me busy during the school year, I have (and continue to) enjoyed meeting members of the community.

Shortly after moving from the moist sea-level climate of the Pacific Northwest to 6,185-feet above sea level, I met my namesake at MCHS.

"Well, you sure don't look like Drew Turner," high school wrestling coach Roman Gutierrez said.

Just for the record, the MCHS senior's "legal name" is LaDrew and mine is short for Andrew.

As both a new member of the community and also the sports reporter for an award-winning daily newspaper in an active community, I strive to make the Craig Daily Press the community's source for sports and recreation activities.

So, please don't hesitate to contact me via phone, 824-7031, ext 211, e-mail at aturner@craigdailypress.com or stop by in person at 466 Yampa Ave. with any story ideas.

It may sound like a cliche, but I want to know what interests you, the reader, the most.

If you are involved in a sport that I haven't covered yet, would like to share your favorite hiking or swimming spots or fishing tales with others, please don't hesitate.

Finally, in my brief time here, I have been welcomed in a warm and genuine manner, and I truly believe that Craig and Moffat County citizens open their arms to virtual strangers with their hospitality. Thank you.

Take care and I look forward to seeing and hearing from you.
