— With 24 days until the start of classes, Moffat County School District has 16 positions left to fill.

“It’s not abnormal,” Assistant Superintendent Joel Sheridan said of the situation.

Open positions include a part-time occupational therapist, literacy coordinator, Title I reading teacher, middle school social studies teacher and middle and high school vocal music teacher. The district also has high school special education, part-time intermediate school math and history and four paraprofessional positions open.

The district also aims to hire a substitute bus driver, night custodian, middle school bookkeeper, computer technician and technology coordinator.

Sheridan said principals are already working on filling the positions, although their first official day back to work is Wednesday.

“It just depends on what position we have available and how hard it’s going to be to fill it,” Sheridan said of the urgency.

There may still be a few additional openings, too, he said. As principals gauge enrollment and class sizes, they may decide to hire additional staff accordingly.

Plus, some teachers may resign with little notice due to family or career changes.

“It doesn’t always happen within the neat school cycle,” Sheridan said. “It just happens.”

Sheridan said he’s not concerned about the positions and thinks they will each be filled by the start of school Aug. 21.

“I can’t think of any time we haven’t filled a position, even if we need to shift in-district staff around to cover our bases,” he said.
